Issues with castle test print

Hi all, saying hello from Singapore

I’m a beginner at 3D printer and i want to give big thanks to Josef and the team for making such a good experience for people who have just started in 3d printing!

After receiving the MK3, I run the calibration tests and test printed the castle model in the sd card using the default settings. It was then I realised that there some areas where there is too little material, resulting in gaps in the model ( between the infill and surface on the base, linear gaps near the crowns of the castle).

Would any one be able to diagnose what the issue might be?

It is hard to tell from the pictures, but the rest of the model looks great from what I can tell.

If you had a clogging issue I would think there would have been a lot more problems and gaps than the ones I can see. My first guess at this point would be a problem with the filament. What brand of filament are you using? Some of the cheaper filaments have been known to have debris cooked in with the plastic that could cause problems.

I’m using Prusa’s orange PLA filament.

When I was observing when it was printing the top surface of the base, the printer seems to have some difficulty in areas where there was no infill support to “catch” the filament. The nozzle will start at the perimeter wall and stop in areas which mat not have infill support, thus drooping down into the holes of the infill. I don’t think its a model issue since its the default gcodes which were provided by Prusa.

Some of the layers doesn’t seem to adhere well too, where you can see part of the model actually broke off easily.

Any advice?

mine has same gaps too but its black so cant see them as much as yours, I suspect its the percentage of infill did you use the presliced models on the sd card

Isn't that what is called "pillowing"? There are many resources on the net proposing fixes

Can we control the infill amount after the gcodes are prepared?

I was under the impression that the infill can only be controlled before the gcodes are generated.

Thanks, yes it's pillowing. Does it mean we have to fix it using slicer and not use the included gcodes, for best results?

I guess yes. You should do some test prints with your material to avoid pillowing for the chosen infill pattern. Then when you have no more pillowing reslice the castle yourself.

I have yet to tackle that problem - in the view larger prints that I have done it has not been an issue.

But I only used the silver PLA and some other brand white PLA - guess every roll might be different. There might even be inconsistencies within the same roll of filament.

Oh I just looked at the towers - that does not look like pillowing to me (but I am NO expert;-))

maybe your extruder is partly clogged?

No you have to reslice to change infill

Re: Issues with castle test print

There are definitely some extrusion problems going on, as you ca see at the interrupted roof layers, the infill shouldn't be a problem. If I got this result I first would check the tension of the extruder idler and the temperature. Maybe it's to loose or/and to cold...Having the idler to tight can be an issue as well. My screwheads of the idler are about half the way in the extruder body, just as a reference. You might have to adapt this to your printers individualism.

In Addition check your firmware release as the recently released 3.1.2 is said to resolve the clogging problems when printing low layer heights as 0,1mm and 0,05mm.

Re: Issues with castle test print

Just to give everyone an update:

Tried printing with prusa grey filament using the same settings and the prints turns out much better with no extrusion issues. I think the problem may be peculiar to the filament and I recall that the sealed package had a small puncture, which may have exposed the filament to moisture. I will try to tweak the temperature to see if it yields better results.
