If you don't like the new X back plate on MK3...

here is a new one that allows belt access: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2727523

If you know good ABS print settings please share.

Cool! Thanks for sharing! I was thinking of making a slotted x motor mount but I like your idea better.

Printed one in ABS on my MK2 printer
Prints great, supports popped right off
I printed it with the flat side down
Only odd thing, one thin spot (a square area about 4 x 4 mm) in groove which doesn't have the hex nut recess. It's only one layer of filament in that one spot.
I don't have an MK3 yet, so I can't say if it fits. You asked for feedback on printing, so I printed one. Hope that's what you meant.

modifications:

Possibly I wasn't clear.
I used the "Generic ABS 1.75 setting"
and my only changes were the ones I noted before.

Great! Thanks for the feedback. I'll get to it today. I'm planning to replicate the factory settings. They print 0.35 layer height and the other direction (default orientation). I suspect they get away without supports too. I'll let you know.

I did a test fitting and now I'm more annoyed with the original design than I already was. You have to completely unplug Einsy, unwire, unwrap, unplumb the whole freaking assembly to remove the back plate! Shoot me now. You don't have to go that far if you are just trying to get to the belt, but still...

If you are waiting for your MK3 and have another printer, I would get this part printed now so you can include it with the initial assembly.

So I was able to successfully remove and relpace the x-belt with the new back plate in place. Not easy, but it works. I tweaked the openings a bit and uploaded version 2 along with printing instructions. Enjoy.

Would this work equally well printed in PETG? I have ABS on hand as well, but like PETG better and happen to have it in black. My mk3 should arrive soon, so I can print this on my mk2s in the meantime.

And on the next page Prusa says the extruder fan shroud is printed with ABS.

Re: If you don't like the new X back plate on MK3...

I´ve printed it in PETG - printed without any issues on my MK2S with generic PET settings in 0.15mm.

Since my MK3 has not arrived yet I am considering printing all parts by myself because looking at some detail pictures it seems like the quality of some delivered printed parts isn´t the best. What do yo guys think?

Yes, PETG is fine. I will clarify in the instructions.

Wait... what??

No you dont... i've adjusted the belt and the only thing you need to remove is the 5 screws, the zip ties and unplug the filament sensor, after that the back plate has enough room for you to twist it sideways to allow room for adjusting the belt!

Still not that simple but not as complicated as you said 🙂

"the only thing you need to remove is the 5 screws, the zip ties and unplug the filament sensor"...lol That's called shitty engineering.

I said that, "You don't have to go that far if you are just trying to get to the belt", but to replace the back plate you have to go to extremes.

Nice work Jltx (and matthew for the video!)! Would it be appropriate to add a comment to the on line manual (step 10 of Z-axis build) regarding the positioning of that belt so that it is not bottomed out contrary to the instructions (or better yet, modify the instructions)?

Ahh... i see it.. sorry xD

Its still a hassle anyway :p.. Might try that backplate the next time i need to adjust the belt (not soon i guess)

Re: If you don't like the new X back plate on MK3...

If the answers to these two questions are somewhere else, please point me to them:

1) if I assemble my MK3 with a backplate different from the one included in the kit, do I void my warranty?

and,

2) is there a reason Josef Prusa created the MK3 with a backplate that has to be removed to service the x-belt attachments?

I would like to hear answers to both questions from someone at Prusa, preferably Josef Prusa.

Re: If you don't like the new X back plate on MK3...

Yes, I too think it is to difficult to get to the x-axis belt for adjustment and replacement.

My solution was to split the original part in two. The top part can be removed with the top two screws and the bottom part stay fixed with the three last screws. This way there will be less stress on the cables when working with the x belt.

It is a new model and has to be printed. I just put it on Thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2731484

It is still untested as I am still building the MK3... 😀 😉

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉
