How to pause and resume MK3
Hi,
I don't plan on letting the printer run during the night so one regular use case for me is pausing the print at night and resuming it the day after.
I've searched the forums for "pause" and did not find it asked before for the MK3.
i did find this thread about pausing the MK2 and the solution exposed would work for me (I don't need perfect prints as the user does so if there are some layer lines I could just sand them.
But the MK3 having the fancy power failure detection that raise the extruder and rehome and reheat and everything I was expecting a "pause" option somewhere that did that without the need to either yank the cable or send lots of commands to the printer by hand.
I've browsed the menus on the display without luck.
Additionally I'm using octoprint (connected via USB) and hitting the pause button there does pause the print but does not raise the extruder so I'm back at the same point.
Thanks a lot for your time and sorry if I missed some obvious pause option somewhere.
Re: How to pause and resume MK3
Have you browsed the menu during a print?
Re: How to pause and resume MK3
there is a pause print option but i have never used it,
some folk say it doesnt work
try change filament
that seems to turn the extruder heater off and leave the bed heated
so your parts dont release

Re: How to pause and resume MK3
I do have browsed the menu.
I'm printing through octorpint so maybe that changes something.
I'll try moving the .gcode to the sdcard and printing through the menu next time to see if I got different options.
What I got right now, if I click the knob on the info screen:
↱ Info screen
-> Tune
↱ Main
-> speed
-> nozzle
-> bed
-> fan speed
-> flow
-> change filament ***
-> fil. sensor
-> mode
-> crash det.
-> Fail stats
-> Support
I guess I could just hit change filament and let the printer wait there, that would be better than clipping the filament or yanking the power chord, but I'm still surprised there is no pause.
As I said, I'll try next print from the sdcard to see if the options are different
Thanks!
Re: How to pause and resume MK3
Ah OK. Well as I used a "pause print" option in the menu already - so it is not available to you using OctoPrint as it seems...
Re: How to pause and resume MK3
Can you send M600 to initiate filament change?

Re: How to pause and resume MK3
Why do you need to raise the extruder head? I've used the pause button before in Octoprint and it works fine.
But honestly just let the printer run overnight.
Re: How to pause and resume MK3
Try this somewhere in your gcode.
G91 ; relative positioning
G0 Z20 ; lift nozzle 20mm
M104 S0 ; cool down hotend
M0 ; whait for user press the knob
M109 S210 ; wait for Hotend temp
G0 Z-20 ; back to print
G90 ; absolute positioning
Re: How to pause and resume MK3
Sorry for the late reply.
The pause button is only available when printing from the SD card and it does work as expected.
I have no issue with printing from there if I plan the print to go on for long so that would do it for me.
Thank you all for the other suggestions though.
@y neil.e As for letting it print overnight… I sleep on the same room where the printer is and it is quite silent but not silent enough even in silent.

I tried pause for the first time yesterday. The print stopped, I made the measurement that I wanted, then I tried to resume. The print head remained at the same "Z" as that to which it had raised when I paused it - then began printing in mid-air until I stopped the print.
So for me it doesn't seem to work.
Is it working in a logical way for anyone on 3.1.3?
Re: How to pause and resume MK3
After i made that post. I experienced the same misopperation

Hi John,
I do pause prints quite frequently with 3.1.2.
I'm planning to update to 3.1.3 this weekend and I'll let you know if it still works.
My workflow for pausing (only tested PLA prints) is, all from the printer panel:
- pause print
- settings -> temperature -> bed -> 0º
- at this point I usually set settings -> mode -> silent because I'm going to bed but it's not needed because the extruder fan will stop spinning once the extruder is cold
- go to bed
- settings -> temperature -> bed -> 60º
- once the bed is at 60º or close -> resume print
If you just pause -> resume the bed will stay at 60. For me it's ok if I just go to the store but for the night I prefer to power that down
If you set the bed to 0 and just resume print it will print with the bed turned off since pause dosn't turn off the bed it does not take that into account when resuming hence the extra steps and the wait for the bed to be at temperature before resuming.
Re: How to pause and resume MK3
Just tested it with 3.1.3 and I have the same behavior as john.n13 described. I resumed the print before the nozzle was cooled down completely. Does this make a difference as it seems to work for Miquel when he pauses over night?
