How much detail is it able to print

Hi. I would like to print a model railway wagon around 19cm long by 7cm high. Is the printer able to print details if was to make the wagon in one pc or do I need to print each side at a time.the detail is of wooden planks which make up the side walls. I am still waiting for the printer to turn up but I am trying to make the drawings and g code. Thanks for your help. Michael

the MK3 should be more than capable for what you are looking for. This figure is only 3.5cm tall and the detail is very good. It was printed on .15mm layer height with quick settings. I have also not gotten around to Tuning the printer to be the best it can. This is just straight after completing the construction of the printer.

You can increase detail with a smaller nozzle (0.25mm or 0.15mm nozzle) and smaller layer heights, but your print time will suffer. 0.4mm nozzle which comes standard is the happy medium of print time + detail. You could go larger and print faster with higher layer heights as well.

Re: How much detail is it able to print

How much detail do you want? I'm in the middle of a major upgrade on my extruder, which once done I plan on getting a 0.15mm nozzle, and print at 0.05mm layers. I've read FDM can go as low as 0.025mm layer height. I may need a bigger upgrade to get there though.

Printing with my 0.25mm nozzle, at 0.05mm layers, I can get point details around 0.1mm in width. Overhangs and bridges are pure evil at that point. (Nearing the Limit of current FDM abilities)

Just get ready to cry.

10x10x10mm test cube, 55 minutes to print.

Once I get my 0.15mm nozzle that's gonna bump up to around 3 hours.

Your rail car would be.
190mm x 70mm x 70mm roughly.

190x70x70= 9,310^3mm

You would be looking at around a 30 day print. With a 0.25mm nozzle with 0.05mm layers... Ouch, now I'm not sure I want a 0.15mm nozzle reading that... Lol... Ouch.

With the standard 0.4mm nozzle, and 0.15mm layer heights, it would look 3D printed. (Still highly detailed, but visible layer lines)
And you could print it off in likely under 2 days, depending on detail.
