Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
Greetings. I recently purchased a MK3 kit and was wondering a couple things. I realize this won't be a plug and play solution and that's fine. I'm coming from several years of Lulzbot ownership and modifications so I'm comfortable with development and modification of printers. What I would like to do is put a full sized raspberry pi where the zero is supposed to mount. I realize the USB ports will be in the way of the header pins so I will need to extend them. Is there any reason why using a full sized pi wouldn't work technically? I will make the modifications to the housings as necessary to mount the pi.
Re: Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
The plan would be to make a removable panel on the electronics case and mount the pi to that. That will make servicing the pi much easier. I'll then make a custom header cable to connect the pi to the einsy.
Re: Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
The bit question is whether the Einsy has enough headroom to power the full RPi. A Zero W should be drawing about 150mA; while a 2B draws about 350mA and a 3B about 400mA. Source: https://www.raspberrypi.org/help/faqs/
Assuming the board has the headroom to power a full-pi (which I'm not convinced it does) then I would still expect that the extra draw will kill the power recovery feature.
When someone asks you if you're a god, you say, "YES!"
Re: Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
Thanks for the info. Is there an alternative +5v source on the einsy? Worst case scenario I could use a buck convertor and power from 12v or 24v rails.
Re: Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
Couldn't you use an external power adapter? I know this would cause an additional power cord to route, but it's an option if you really want to use a full size model.
Re: Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
I'm sure I could. I just like having the cleanliness of everything internal to the case. Would there be any issues with using the gpio and a 5v adapter in tandem?
Re: Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
Mk2/S Haribo and Mk3 here, both with external RPi3's. Both Pi's powered separately to printer by mains 5v USB adapters. Not as pretty as running off the printer power but works perfectly and does not load the printer PSU's which appear to be underpowered at times anyway.

I am about to mimic your setup. I was wondering: are the pin outs and software setup for the full size pi compared to the pi zero? My plan is to use OctoPrint on my shiny new MK3.
Thanks!
Re: Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
I actually found a decent solution to mount a full sized pi on thingiverse. It's not ideal as it requires printing a whole new einsy case, but the placement of the Pi seems about as good as were gonna get. I've looked into under bed mounting and several other places on the MK3. If you plan on the MMU then choices are limited. I'd still like to remove get a full sized pi in the einsy case though.

If you are connecting the Pi to the EINSY via header pins, it at least needs to share the EINSY's ground (or you are opening the door to one of them misbehaving). In theory you should be able to use an external power adapter for the Pi, connect the ground header pin, and leave the V+ header pin disconnected... however I haven't tested this, nor do I specifically remember reading a post from someone who has.
Re: Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
I use a PI3 attached to the headers no problem. I fabricated my own cable. It prints signifcantly better than the pi zero I had. Mentioned this in another thread.
Where did you mount the Pi? Care to share the files?

I connect my Pi's via usb and ignore the Einsy headers
Re: Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
Is there any benefit to using the headers? Increased speeds, better print quality, etc? I'm leaning toward printing the zaribo case i posted earlier and just connecting via usb. If it makes it worthwhile I'll make a header cable and connect that way but i can't see it making that big of a deal.
Re: Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
Does anybody know if you can flash the einsy firmware from a pi when connected over the pin header? I've had success using this method over USB ( https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/software-f13/how-to-update-the-firmware-without-usb-connection-t1700.html#p13094 ). If you can't, which I suspect is the case, that would give USB a big advantage IMO.

I had tons of problems with layer shift over USB and the printer crashing. It was several versions of the firmware ago, but only had it happen once connected to the headers. YMMV.

I just printed a regular pi case and have the cable ran around to the side and its sitting next to the printer. Not really an elegant solution, but was mostly looking for functionality.

Thanks for following up.

I use this one. would be ideal for some nice short jumpers.

Are you powering the Pi3 with a seperate power adapter?
Can you provide details on the cable wiring/fabricated cable?
Thx
Re: Full size raspberry pi in place of zero?
Someone has tried yet to connect the RPi and external power supply at the same time? Does it work?
