First prints off my MK3!

After waiting (and waiting), my MK3 finally arrived this weekend. After about 10 hours to assemble, it printed really well out of the box. I'm using the stock Slic3r settings and everything seems to be working very well. I ran into some first layer issues which seemed to be fixed by cleaning with cold water and dish detergent.

The cake was for my dad's 62nd birthday. The cake acts as a base, and the numbers rest on posts that stick up.

The second image is a cord support for my Surface Pro 3 charger. I've gone through three chargers so far, as the small cable tends to lose connection as it flexes, eventually refusing to supply power. This device snaps onto the charger, then the cable snaps into a channel which prevents it from flexing for 1". Hopefully it helps when its thrown in my backpack daily.

Hi Andrew,
welcome to the group.

I like your PSU protector, but I cant help thinking that you have made s small error in the design.

on the original, you had a cable strain relief, coming out of the brick, which reduced the strain immediately at the case, but unfortunately didn't protect the cable just beyond the case

now you have a rigid extension at the case, which concentrates the cable strain a little further from the case, this is likely to cause premature failure, at the end of the extension of the case, and possibly faster, because there is no integrated strain relief,
I think you would be better off either:

1, making the device out of Flax filament so that the extension around the cable, flexes and gives strain relief, this might benefit from making the cable extension, thinner to allow more gentle curvature over a greater length of cable. or

2, making the end of the cable extension into a flared trumpet shape, to make the cable bend gently, over a greater distance when you coil the cable

regards Joan

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

Also take heat into consideration. These things tend to get quite hot, especially since you enclosed half of it, and it seems you printed it with Prusa PLA.
I would suggest reprinting it with ColorFabb nGen or PETG (nGen is more expensive but prints as easily as PLA, simply use the default Slic3r PE settings for it. I really like that filament), which can witstand temperatures of 80 degrees without getting soft.

Joan gave a good suggestion. I'll give one more 🙂 Print the box in multiple parts, so the cable protections slot into the main body somehow. This allows you to print those in another material. You could print them in ColorFabb ngen_flex. Again, an amazing material that prints as fast as PLA (not like Ninjaflex where you have to go to 10mm/s and hope for not getting spaghetti inside the extruder), and depending on the amount of perimeters and infill you can make it as flexible as you want, so it would give you flex in the cable protection. Again, just use the default Slic3r PE settings for it and play with the amount of perimeters and the type / amount of infill to give you the flex you want.

Disclaimer: I do not work for ColorFabb, but I have discovered their amazing range of materials, have great experiences with them on my mk3 and honestly I am wondering if the spools of Ninjaflex I have around here (unopened) will ever be used for something.

Oh, and that stuff is tough!

The big secret is an absolutely clean bed and a carefully calibrated Z level.

Good point, one thing I didn't note was that the z height did take some adjustment to get right.
