I mounted the Z motor mounts and it works very well. Previously, the motor was clearly of centered from the center hole and now it is perfect. It is also really handy to easily mount/remove the motors. I have attached the X axis on top of the frame with a string and then you can work on the motors without wobbly maneuvers.


Where are the new mk3 z tops you said you were working on? Am I missing something?

Perhaps the description indicating compatability is only up to MK2.5. Are they fine for MK3. Maybe update the text or make it clear if there is a separate file.

For now I do not have much time for the X axis. It is the most complex part and to do good job I have to go deep and this will takes several days/weeks. I would like to first release my Prusa i3 Bear Upgrade version 2.0 : https://github.com/gregsaun/prusa_i3_bear_upgrade/tree/dev

X axis is definitely pretty complicated.

As far as the Bear upgrade... That might be the ticket for my current Mk2. I've been wanting the removable bed, but I refuse to do anything to this printer as long as it still has the threaded rods. And $500 is a bit much for a full MK3 upgrade, so this might make more sense. So best of luck with that one!

The threaded rods is not the only one responsible of the flex in this printer (but clearly the biggest one). I was quite surprised when I mounted my half upgrade for the first time, thas was way more strong. However the alu frame has also a bit of flex and it is visible in the prints. This is why I propose two types of upgrade with the V2.0, depending the needs of the users.

What is version 1.0 and what is 2.0

On the github I only find full and half mod.

Be careful with that; that's assuming the edge of the frame is taken as seriously as the screw holes.

Not trying to toss a turd in the punch bowl, just making a note of it. It might work out, it might not.

Which features were the tooling reference? We don't know. We know that the relative hole locations are important so they paid attention to those... but the edges might be a crapshoot.

You are totally right, we cannot guarantee the references of the holes in the frame. And if it is good now we cannot guarantee it will still be good in 6 months. I will rollback, thanks 😉

Could someone explain what are the differences between the designs ?

I adjusted a dimension error found on Prussia's original part. The motor holder was expanded 0.5 mm so that the motor could be placed in the right place.
Gregsaun has also adjusted the motor location and added a small detachable front part so that the console can be mounted / disassembled without removing the entire Z unit.

Then Gregsaun put a bracket on the side of the motor holder, which would improve positioning and provide better support.

Personally, I think the extra support bracket is good. The frame is made of a NC cutter and the accuracy of the geometry of the frame should be within a few hundredths of mm. What can affect the accuracy is the epoxy layer (about 0.15 mm) to which the frame is treated.

Thanks for the explanation. Do they have to be printed in PETG ? Can they be printed in ABS. I know jltx told me that printed in ABS will be too tight.

It should work with ABS. The dimensions of the holes have just been adjusted a little.
Should they be tight, it can be fixed with a sandpaper or a suitable drill.

Irawans> My design also improve the strength as top plate is 2mm thicker (and the angle brackets are longer, and some hidden features). Due to this you will need to use M3x12mm instead of M3x10mm originally. Jltx then decided to remix my design to add pocket for screws in order to use the original M3x10mm.

The solution in my sig link fixes all the Z issues identified in this thread, motor offset, screw holes, smooth rod holes. Plus adds easy maintenance panel (thanks gregsaun!).
