Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
Hi There, i am getting Print Fan Error, randomly. I checked the fans they are spinning just fine.
I had a 11h print going on and it stopped with this error at around 98%. I tried to resume several times. It continued for a min or so and came back with the error. Eventually, i clicked on resume too early and the extruder had an ~100mm offset above the print. So yeah 😡
Ever since then i keep getting this.
Selftest: it sometimes works and sometimes the following:
The selftest checks first the Extruder Fan (Nucta) and then i Parts Blower. In the same order they spin up.
The extruder fan - > OK
Print Fan -> Fail
then the wizards says: Please check : Left hotend fan? Wiring error
This confuses me. I think there is something mixed up and that's why i am getting the error mentioned above.
Slicer: Slic3r and Cura
Print from SD Card (although rpi is piggibacked)
Firmware: 3.1.1 b143 RC4
Error:ERROR: Print fan speed is lower then expected
Selftest: fails (sometimes)
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
i have the same problem, why is this not answered?
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
I had a similar issue that turned out to be a bad print fan wire. I logged a support request and was sent a new fan. While disassembling the hot end to replace the fan I found that the fan wire break was actually at the point in the hot end where the pinda probe wire and the print fan wire pass between the rails.
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
I guess the self-test had swapped fans messages, see this commit . So the next release should have this fixed. I have to check the cable. I'll do that when I replace the linear rods with the hardened ones. In the meantime i am and was printing with the fan detection off. Thanks for the hint.
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
I did receive the same exact error but it was the fan wire. Good luck. The variation in temperature caused me to not print for a few days since it caused some quality issues.
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
I replaced the linear rods and checked the parts fan cables with a multimeter. In Fact the sensing cable (yellow) seem not to be conducting. I have manually replaced the 3 wires. With the RC5, the new fan wires and the new rods. It seems to be all good.
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
For those who found that the fan wire was damaged: When you replaced it, did you do anything different when you put the new fan wire back into the hot end with the pinda probe wire?
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
I placed the Pinda probe wire first then the fan wire. I also found that wrapping a small piece of wire or string through the little tab that holds the wires in place and pulling on the wire or string while pushing the hot end in the opposite direction made placing the fan wires much less stressful on the fan wire.
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
I'll be getting my new fan tomorrow so I'll look carefully during assembly to see if your method will help me. Thanks rich.t
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
Hi,
same problem here with the black radial Fan. The rpm is hopping arround and sometimes it drops down. Some prints with the Setup an now the problem.
Is this a known Issue ? Do i get a new fan from prusa ?
Christian
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
I've been printing great for two weeks and now I'm getting the print fan error and the reported rpms are very sporadic. Mine seems to be a bad wire exactly like rich.t is describing. One thing I noticed was the fan wires were actually touching the ribbed/threaded side of the pinda probe. The insulation on the the yellow wire looked worn due to vibration of the wire against the probe body. When I rewire the replacement, I'm going to make sure the wire is isolated from the hard metal pinda probe body....

Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
So... Just got a new i3mk3 preassembled and I'm on my second roll of filament and wow.... I have the same damn problem. I traced the short to the wiring bundle right behind the hot end assembly. So now I get to take apart my snazzy new printer and replace a wire (or all of them) when this should have been a known issue and addressed on the assembly line... Yay!
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
I own the printer a little more than a month, and I had 2 of 3 wires broken - I checked with multi meter and only 1 out of was passing signal.
The fix was to replace the cable with more robust ones.
I am surprised Prusa does not fix this while this is a known problem.
Eventually all printers will have broken fan wire - because its very very weak wire.
And it breaks right inside the moving wrap.
Prusa - fix this - by shipping different wire with the printer. It's a lot of efforts for us to break down the printer after 3 weeks of use

I'm also getting this error now, on both of the MK3's we've got at work. Each is a bit beyond 2.5km of filament.
There's some degree of strain relief thanks to the spiral wire wrap, but this is a continuous-flex application, without using cabling that's rated for it.
My guess is that the fan is only the first to see its wires fail. There's also PINDA, the filament sensor, the extruder motor, and the heater wires. Conductor breaks could manifest as complete failures of a subsystem, or as intermittent problems.
And even cables rated for continuous flexing have some stipulations, such as a minimum bend radius, though I don't see that being a problem on this printer.
I am going to try printing this strain relief (first time printing flex filament), but I feel that even that will only be a stop-gap solution. The next place I would expect to see the cables failing is where they go into the controller box, and eventually elsewhere in the cable.
Has Prusa not encountered this issue in their own printer farms?
Re: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
Many thanks to rich.t and your tip.
I have exactly the same issue, but it was the fan cable. Directly behind the bridge, which fixed all cables on the back, a cable was broken. The only thing that I do not really understand, if I find this topic so often here, why is there no official answer to this problem? Also I had the issue already two months after the purchase. Now after eleven months - I have switched off the fan test in the meantime - I could fix the error. Now I have found the cable break and fixed it. Thanks to the help of you, I am now very satisfied with my MK3 again. 😀

Had this issue also and discovered the root cause with the aid of this video. Surprised that this issue was not caught by the engineering team, and even more shocked at how the customer service dept. is responding. My response is to let people know about an alternative (Zortrax M200); have two at work and way more robust compared to Prusa 😉
That's how I feel about Prusa now 🤬
RE: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
@james-j13
a $2200 printer is not an "alternative" to a Prusa.....
RE: Fan Weirdness & Err: PRINT FAN ERROR
@kerby-t
Well it is an alternative, it just depends on what your requirements are. There's a whole list of other alternatives here.

"Well it is an alternative, it just depends on what your requirements are."
By that token, every other 3d printer is an alternative, true but unhelpful.
