Extruder motor running very hot
I have noticed that my extruder moter
is getting really hot during prints. It is so hot that you can only touch it for a few seconds before it starts to hurt. Is this normal?
Re: Extruder motor running very hot
It's normal.
Re: Extruder motor running very hot
It's possible that it is normal, but that will not mean that it is good. What about the high temperature at the gears? It's all metal, so the high temperature of the motor will directly heating up the gears. I have huge problems with the extruder when I try to print at 0.1 layer high, and I'm not the only one, see thread below: https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3-f30/clicking-printhead-filament-stuck--t14916.html
Re: Extruder motor running very hot
On my mk3 i was concern about that even if i've no problem with the extreduer. I ve an laser infrared thermometer and i check the temp of the extruder motor and the extruder gear while printing. In an enclosure (MAX : 30°C) while printing PLA (215°C/60°C) the exruder motor reach 58°C and the gears 41°C. So for me no problem. The motor is able to work with 100°C (Specification)
Hope it can help you
(i can share some pictures if you want)

Re: Extruder motor running very hot
I wrote the support and they told me to lower the pressure to the gears. When assembling the MK3 I followed the manual but I will try to loosen the screws much more.

Prusa have assured everyone that the motors are designed and capable of running MUCH hotter.. So arguing that this heat would damage the gears is like saying you will ruin a car engine because its gets hot.
The motors are designed for this, so there should be no risk to reliability.

Sorry, you completly misunderstud me. I never wrote the high temperature will harmful to the motor or the gears. The question was if the high temperature on the gears will interact negativly with the filament. At the moment I have massive problems when I try to print something at really low layer hights. The filament will stuck after a few layers.
