Extruder Jam at < 0.10mm layer heights
I've been printing for about a month now, and whenever I try to print any layers less than 0.10 mm my extruder jams. I've tried using the 0.05 default Slic3r PE settings and also the variable layer height down to 0.07 mm. I'm using Prusa PLA at 205º. Any ideas?
Re: Extruder Jam at < 0.10mm layer heights
After a little looking around I'll try a few cold pulls to see if I can get any junk out of the nozzle. I'll report back to see if it behaves any better afterward.
Re: Extruder Jam at < 0.10mm layer heights
I did a few cold pulls and got a few specks of gunk out of the nozzle. Then I loaded some eSun PLA+ and used the same print settings. Looks like it is printing just fine at 0.07 mm.
Re: Extruder Jam at < 0.10mm layer heights
It will jam again.
Printing below 0.10mm takes.. a different approach.
Printing PLA with 205 degrees is way to cold. I used to print at 215, then 210, then 205, but my printing problems surmounted that way. Printing PLA with 225 - 235 degrees works way better. Overhang edges can take a hit, but increase fan speed to 100% and total print speed to 80% works great.
A few things to try that help:
- print PLA at 225 degrees
- turn off retractions and z-hop
- increase motor power with M907 E650
Re: Extruder Jam at < 0.10mm layer heights
So I've disabled z hop and retraction, bumped my temp to 225º and adjusted the speeds a bit. I just got a jam (that the printer detected), so I pushed the temp up to 235º.
The piece I'm printing to test is a cone. It jammed up at 0.8mm (still laying down full layers), and they looked pretty rough. Is there something I can do to better calibrate the machine to be able to handle printing at 0.05mm layers?

HI, Im not sure if my extruder has been skipping the odd step, whats the max current it can take do you know? whats the easiest way to tell whats its set to now? thanks
Re: Extruder Jam at < 0.10mm layer heights
It looks like bumping it to 240º has allowed it to run better. I didn't adjust the extruder motor power because it already runs pretty hot. For reference, my eSun PLA+ is "rated" from 205-225º. I'd probably run my Hatchbox PLA at a lower temp, since it recommends lower temps. I'll give that a shot later and see what results I get.
