Extruder connector?

Does anybody know if there is a reason why according to the assembly manual all the wires from the extruder run through to the einsy board?
Wouldn't it be better to have some sort of connector on the backplate of the extruder so switching faulty components would be more easy?
Am i missing something there?

Re: Extruder connector?

It’s a design trade-off, there are pros and cons, so “better” is subjective depending on how you weight the advantages.

It would absolutely make head maintenance easier if there was a (set of) connector(s) that would allow the cables to quick disconnect from the head side, but it would come at increased cost, and need for custom electrical parts. So, for example, they would want to get fans with 6-ish cm cables, and a probably very custom, although simple, board to act as the patch panel. They’d then need cables to run from the head to the controller... I’m not saying the cost would be huge, but it would not be trivial.

Aside from maintenance, a quick head swap capability would be a nice idea for an upgrade. The best use case I can think of is to be able to swap back and forth between a single filament head and MMU. And while It’s overkill, another use case would be to have different heads with different nozzles. But there’s a good chunk of cost in a complete extra head.

The use case for a company like Prusa, running a printer farm, would be less downtime if/when a head clogs. Just quick-swap a clean head, recalibrate, and put the printer back to work near instantly while cleaning the clog at leisure.

When someone asks you if you're a god, you say, "YES!"

Not to mention the need for connectors that won't fail due to the significant vibration.
