Default MK III settings extruder loud for PETG

Got my MK III in the mail today. Did two test prints with included silver PLA that basically went okay.

Sliced a benchy with default generic PETG settings in PrusaControl and put in black PETG (eSUN).

Frequent filament errors from sensor so I turned it off.

Bigger issue is either the fan or the stepper driving the extruder is very high pitched whine that is really hard to be in the room with. If it is unavoidable so be it, but I want to make sure I am not missing some setting. I tried stealth but that seemed to just be for XYZ.

I noticed the optical errors for PETG were already posted in the forum. I took a 4 second video if my written description is not enough to be sure of what is making the noise. I'll find a way to post it elsewhere if needed, as attaching an MP4 here did not go through.

I presume the noise will go back away with a PLA print.

Edit: I turned the fan speed to 0 and the noise stops.

If you run the fan at 100% (255) The noise will go away as well. I can't recall if this is a "contact support" issue or not... Mine does it as well, and I would like to follow through, if it is a contact support issue. (and I'd rather not bother them at all if it's not)

All of the fans whine when running at reduced rate. Personally I consider us lucky that the Mk3 is so quiet that we can even hear that little fan based on many hours of listening to a Mk2S grinding back and forth 🙂

You should hear my mini-delta.
(This isn't me, but it's got a great example of the sound... but it's LOUD)

This video really don't do it justice... but it sounds to me, a bit like the hydraulics off a excavator working... everywhere it's printing. To say it's loud is an understatement.

I think I agree it is PWM issue with how it is driven. It could be possible to build a little PWM to PWM circuit that will make it inaudible.

Here is what mine sounds like at 255 and 75 settings on the fan. Anyone should be able to look at that link.
