Bad layer?

Assembled the MK3 kit last week and have been getting some pretty good prints, but just had my first 2 failures/problems.

During the Makerbot t-rex the first few parts printed great but I just had a part come out with a big visible gap between layers and it just broke in half when I pushed on it, looks like on one side it didn't fill in correctly? Using prusa control with optimal settings, brim, and support to base, and the latest firmware.

Another issue was a Jaguar logo a friend requested, looked like a great test of filling the bed with something flat. The 1st layer went on great with no issues, but when I came back the 2nd layer had a bunch of little nits like the end of the filament was pulled up as the extruder zipped away, like half the size of a rice grain each. If you pulled on one it would take a track of filament with it. Overall the print came out okay but as the nozzle went past all those little nits you could hear it hit them. Didn't trigger the crash detection though.

Any hints on fixing the layer issue with the bones or the nits on large flat prints? Or does this just happen some times?

Re: Bad layer?

It really looks like the model or slicer messed up on that first picture - that top looks like it was meant to be a solid external layer!

For the "nits" you describe - I have this when I run layer 1 at full speed. Try slowing layer 1 to 15 mm/sec (or use the dial to set it to 50%) and see if that works for you.

Thanks for the tips, I guess its time to try slic3r out instead of prusa control and fine tune. For the jaguar logo it was moving REALLY fast compared to the smaller stuff I'd done.

Loaded up in slic3r and its obviously an error, can see the two gaps I got right away.

Re: Bad layer?

I just printed the t-rex using cura and simplify3d trying different settings, so I can tell you that: The makerbot t-rex has some flaws/gaps in the vertebrae parts, although your specific issue might be caused by the slicer, I'd just try one of the remixes with fixed/fused vertebrae.

Yeah I tried a remixed model too, and same gaps show up in Slic3r. I ended up using the microsoft tools3d repair site and then meshmixer beta to convert the result back to stl, and now it slices okay at least in the preview. Trying the print again in a few minutes.
