Re: After PETG prints PLA no longer sticks

I have had this same issue, it happens especially bad when you print PETG directly on the PEI with no windex/glue. I don't know if the PETG leaves behind a residue or what, but here's what I do:

  • I still have a practically "new" side of my steel sheet. I resolved not to use it until I completely destroy the side I have already made some mistakes on. The using this side for PLA and other side for PETG isn't a bad idea, but I also see the merit in having a sheet that is going to be pristine for when I need a beautiful first layer.

  • On your "beater" side of the sheet, mix a little water and dish soap together and wet sand it with 1,000 grit sandpaper. If you're not keen on the different grits of sandpaper, 1,000 is pretty fine. The soap in the water will reduce friction and the liquid will help hold your sand paper to the PEI surface. Do this as evenly as you can across the entire surface until it looks evenly "blurred". It will still feel smooth and look smooth, just kinda foggy. It will stick 1,000,000x better, enough so that PETG residue won't keep PLA from sticking.

  • 90+% alcohol or even 70% alcohol have served me fine after sanding. I have used acetone a little too initially, but since sanding I have kept that bottle capped.
  • I have damaged my PEI in one small spot by PETG sticking so well to this surface, but this was mostly my fault for not cooling the sheet sufficiently before popping the print off (it was XYZ calibration cube number #4065, printed in that same spot as all the others, don't judge me 🙂 ). I have had good luck with PETG directly on the PEI with bed temp of 85-90c, providing you cool it down before removing print.

    Hope this helps.
