Removable build plate, is it possible???

Hi
Is there any way I can adjust the distance the P.I.N.D.A. probe uses down to the bed, if I want to have a removable build plate on top of the original bed?

Live Z Adjust; but you would need a very thin removeable plate as the sensor distance is quite close.

The removeable plate would need to be non-metallic and not interfere with the sensing. Either that or use an aluminium plate which should be detected by the sensor.

You can do as Peter says. Get some very thin Ali sheet at 1-2mm and that will be perfect. I might actually give that ago at some point. Would probably need to leave it on preheat for a much longer time to distribute the heat.

The big problem with aluminium is that the thinner it is, the more it can bend.

You will probably need a 4mm sheet to prevent the warping, but then you would maybe also have to reduce the printer acceleration settings.

Aircraft grade aluminium is the best for this.

That's the problem with almost any material. 😆 Maybe except glass, it won't bend that much. 😉

Re: Removable build plate, is it possible???

Before I got my MK2, I was researching the Makergear M2 printer and was going to buy that. I read their forums for quite a bit and they were always having someone with MIC6 Aluminum plates milling them for the purpose of using them as part of the heatbed. From what I remember of those posts, they stated that MIC6 doesn't suffer warping as much as other forms of aluminum. Their main source was McMaster Carr. I realize that McMaster Carr only ships to USA because of some prior lawsuit.

Dimensions PNG

and an 8 inch (200mm) or greater caliper is recommended.

Thats a shame 🙁 But what was the law suit about? was there already someone in Europe supplying it?

I would like to add a fiber plate. But it is 2mm and I am sure that the probe will be a problem if I try just to adjust it manually 😥

Re: Removable build plate, is it possible???

In some other thread I proposed one possible but not verified way of using removable build plate.
A prerequisite of that is the build plate has precisely the same thickness in all area.

It could be done using Z offset in slicing software.
1. Heat up the bed and calibrate using ordinary starting gcode commands without build plate mounted.
2. After that, move extruder up for enough clearance (like 30mm or so) and let extruder being heated up.
3. Mount build plate during heating up of extruder (I know, not much time, but enough I guess).
4. After heating up, the print starts at Z offset corresponding to thickness of build plate.

What do you think about it?

David,

Unless your removable plate is extremely thin it won't have enough time to reach the heated bed temperature before the print starts. This may cause issues with the first layer sticking.

I could help it by "Pause print" command from menu.

Just preheat before printing 😉

It should be possible to add metal insert in the removable build plate to allow detection by the probe.
