Re-post/shameless plug: Vibration dampers!

I posted these a while back, but I've revised the design a bit and I think many would like to have such a thing for their printer:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1707045

Sound levels drop so much that you'll almost only hear the fans spin.

Many have suggested that these dampers will skew the Y/X plane resulting in lower quality prints, but I have yet to see this happen to my prints even after using these for many months now. They're decently stable in bearing the weight of the printer, despite the looks.

Note: These are meant for 0,40 mm extrusion width, not 0,45 mm! You won't get the same strength if you don't follow that setting.

These are fantastic noise dampers. I've tried a number of different types, and these reduce noise better than the others I've tried.

I've tried both the full size and smaller size.

I'm still trying to figure out how to assemble the mini version. It's so damn tight!

How would you say the noise levels differ between the two sizes?

They are very tight. I use Raptor PLA from MakerGeeks, which is a high strength, high heat resistant PLA. It has a little more "give" than regular PLA. I use a small needle nose pliers to hold them open while I insert the other piece. It is difficult.

How would you say the noise levels differ between the two sizes?

If the regular MK2 with felt pads had a noise reduction score of 1 on a scale of 1 to 10, then your large version would have a score of 8, and the small version would have a score of 5.

I did some testing with an SPL (sound pressure level) App on my iPhone. I have no idea how accurate it is, but since the tests were conducted minutes apart by me, at least the relative numbers should be useful:

Here was the setup:

- iPhone 6s on top of empty paper towel core on desk
- Paper towel core 30 inches/ ~76 cm from left side of MK2
- Same STL print checked and averaged over same layers. Print was nearly edge to edge diagonally as long runs were loudest

Results:
+ Flexible filament feet below standard MK2 feet with felt pads:
----> Noise is typically in the 62-65 db range with spikes to 70-72 db
+ Full size Hofftari dampers:
----> Noise is typically in the 54-56 db range with spikes to 63-65 db
+ Mini size Hofftari dampers:
----> Noise is typically in the 57-59 db range with spikes to 64-67 db

Hopefully these results are useful to others.

Cool, that's a noticeable drop! Thanks for posting these numbers 🙂

Re: Re-post/shameless plug: Vibration dampers!

Hi,

I made a different style of vibration damper and hope you don't mind if I drop it here in this topic.
Maybe JohnOCFII could print those and add them to the list of noise improvement?

(customizable size, but I uploaded a stl for MK2 feet)
