Path of mesh leveling
The mesh leveling is great, but is it necessary before every print? Couldn't there be an option to skip it sometimes, like maybe just check the first print each day? How much does it change in a day?
There also seem to be simple ways to speed up the process. For instance, there are nine points it checks, and the current path between them has 6 x-legs, 2 y-legs, and 2 d-legs (diagonals). The x-legs are longer than the y-legs. If instead of going back and forth it goes around and then ends in the middle, this becomes 5 x-legs, 3 y-legs, and 1 d-leg. This is a significantly shorter distance.

I don't understand the thought process.
Are you trying to save time? With an average print time of 2-3 hours, that minute it takes to do the leveling is insignificant.

If you use Slic3r then you can simply comment out the mesh bed leveling in the Start G-code (Printer Settings-Custom G-code) as that is where it is added. But I wouldn't recommend it as it is insignificant as Richard pointed out.
Speaking of "Significant shorter distance" - My MK3 does the leveling in 31.17 seconds. So, your 15% saving in distance traveled equals about 4.67 seconds. I would rather have 'them' working on fixes rather that something like this.

My average print is under 10 minutes, so 31.17 seconds is significant. Besides, the spirit of rep rap is to figure out how improvements might be made, no matter how small. I don't think changing the path would take them even an hour... multiplied times millions of prints on their machines - it adds up.
I'd be curious to know how much the mesh bed data changes from one print to the next. There should be an option on slic3r to either use the latest saved data, or obtain and save a dataset before printing. I'd click "use saved data" probably 90% of the time, and save myself another 31.17 seconds.
I ain't gettin' any younger.

If your prints only take 10 minutes, they must be very small.
If you combine your prints, then you would save a significant amount of time.
It is very rare to find someone who regularly prints such small objects.
But worry not! I do have a working solution which I have been using for years...
Heat the printer while doing the calibration...
You will find a few links in the forum how to do this; maybe try a search on "170". (That may work, but I haven't tried. Key is that calibration starts with the nozzle at 170 degrees.)
