MMU for a novice?

Just received my new MK 3S and love it.  I know almost nothing about the printer so I bought it assembled. The ability to print two colors is very interesting but there are many posts about the difficulty in calibrating the MMU.  From what I read I can do a manual changeout of filament if I modify the slice file.  Is the ease of the MMU worth the cost and the complexity to use?

Don't even consider an MMU until you consider yourself journeyman level at 3D printing.

You have enough to learn with the basic machine. The MMU will make it about 4 times as hard to learn.

Then let's buckle-up for a steep learning curve and go for it 🙂

For somebody who can make it work, hell yes. It's inexpensive upgrade adding a lot of features to your existing MK3(s).

For somebody who is afraid to buy a MK3 kit where you can find a tons of videos people assembling it in a very fine detail. It's definitely nothing you should consider to buy right now. Use your MK3s for whatever purpose you bought it and get some experience in FDM printing first and especially get your printer to know. You will see, there is a lot to learn.

Happy printing!

Enthusiasm can wane pretty quickly in the face of apparently unresolvable issues... Just remember that if/when you encounter something you cannot figure out. Relax, take a step back, and look again the next day.

I got my first printer in Jan 2019, and the MMU that August. I methodically worked through the issues and ended up with it in a state where I was regularly doing zero-intervention multicolour (and even some multimaterial) prints. Granted, I don't use it as much for that at the moment (more single colour stuff on the table right now) but that'll happen again in time with some larger projects I have planned.

RE: MMU for a novice?

I've ordered the MMU with my i3 kit.  This will be my first printer so I'm nervous I may have bitten off more than I can chew, but I'm going to give it a go.  I'm still waiting for it to arrive so I've started to dive into the software side and a couple models like a filament holder.  It's probably going to change 4x before the printer gets here.  My dilemma is how to get the extrusion indicator to print cleanly in black and orange like I've designed.  It's only like 40 mm diameter.

Is the indicator STL in three parts? one for each colour?

if it is, try zipping it, and attaching it and I will have a look!

RE: MMU for a novice?

I'm thinking two color now, and looser swirls because it's so small.

I have it broken into two stl files, but not into two color specific parts.  I have all the orange as one part, then the whole thing as a solid as the other.  Can I easily extract the orange from the whole?  Or do I need to?

Got it zipped but any suggestions on where to upload it?

There was no "attach file" button previously.  There is now 🙂  Thank you.
