Layer shifting...

Usually I see layer shifting occurring when the printing head moves over a printed part after finishing a layer and before starting a new one.

On my i3 mk2 or mk2s may times this movement leads to these collisions and subsequent layer shifting.

On my D-bot it is very rare to see this type of collisions. The D-bot has simply a Z end stop and no bed levelling correction, the bed if levelled by hand.

I suspect that the issue occurring more often on the prusa is related to the existence of an auto levelling that when the layer ends being printed does not moves the Z quickly enough to compensate for the quick movement of the printing head when moving to start a new layer.

If you notice, the Z on the MK2 is always moving during a print, this is to compensate the bed tilt or warping... It is possible that if a layer ends printing at a lower point of the bed, when the printhead moves to the beginning of the next layer, if it crosses points on the part that is being printed that are higher it will struck them.

Maybe this was taken into account but maybe because the speed between layers can be set on the slicer the machine does not has a reliable way to know if the printhead will struck the part during movement.

Does this makes sense?

Re: Layer shifting...

Have you tried slowing down the print? Or making sure that the print head / sensor are securely attached? Just a shot in the dark.. ❓

Re: Layer shifting...

Slowing down the speed between layers would probably work, I could also level the bed with aluminium foil pieces between the Y carriage and the bed.

The sensor and X carriage are secured but still I´ll see if the mk3 X carriage works on the mk2 and change it on my machines... Looks more sturdy. When they sell the bondteck pinions gears as a spare...
