Layer Indicator on LCD Display

I wasn't sure where to put this -- improvements or software as it's a feature request/improvement for the software.

The percentage complete is great, but I find myself frequently looking at the print, especially around bridging, and wondering what it's doing / if it's messing up. I usually leave open the prusa slicer while I'm printing and will guestimate what layer I'm on and move and review the layer and tool paths accordingly. It'd be really great if the LCD displayed the layer perhaps alternating with the percentage complete said something like layer 60/200.

Cheers,
-E

That's actually a rather good idea!. Many a time I check for issues before printing in Slicer and if I develop an issue during printing, it would be good to know which slice to look at for improving things or if necessary add a modifier to.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

... you know both the LCD and PS display layer Z heights, right?

Yeah, the issue isn't that I can't currently find the slice, I can always find within one or two layers - it's that based on layer thickness settings I don't know exactly which one I'm on - and besides that, it'd just be easier if I had a layer number

I think I know what you mean. I've been using Cura and it has a post processing script that prints on the LCD display "Layer: 7 of 100" for example.

It is really great! I do the same as you, keep the slicer open and keep checking my print, especially when it's complex or trick. If something goes wrong, I can easily identify the layer it's printing.

I'm testing the Prusa Slicer... Quality apparently is as good as Cura, not sure if it's better. I noticed Prusa Slicier uses more filament and takes more time to print the same thing, with similar settings on Cura. Besides that Prusa has fewer functions. For example, I miss a better control of the fan. On Cura you can set a percentage increasing in speed for each layer. Like, "increase 20% per layer until reaches 80% of maximum speed".

But on top of everything, I miss the current layer printed on the display.

I'm trying to figure it out how to do that, If I find an answer I'll come back to share the answer.

There is a height indicator ... 122.45 mm ... and with the slicer as shown above, you can get back to actual layer.

To add the info to the display, while more info is almost always good, what info do you want to give up?  4x24 is not a lot of room, so not many options.

Depending on the printer and display you have, there is no need for giving up on information.

I have a Tevo Tarantula and it has enough room on the display to show the current layer and the total layers.

And, as I said, Cura has this function, I use it all the time and it's great! If Pursa Slicer had it, would be excellent. And if you don't want it, just turn it off, as you can do on different slicers.

There is a possible solution I haven't tried yet...

Using the PrusaSlicer got to "Printer Settings" - "Custom G-code"

On the field "After layer change G-code" try to add: M117 [layer_num]

If you do that, export the Gcode and expect that, you will see in the beginning of each layer "M117 #"

The first layer is "M117 0". I'm trying to figure it out how to make it consider the first layer as 1 instead of 0 and how to show something like: "1 of 100"

Just to mention - Octaprint shows you the current layer, and has a plugin that shows you the tool path for this layer.

And lets you adjust the fan at any point...

Hmm, this is a Prusa MK3/S forum... so is what other brand printers can or can't do pertinent ??

this is a user forum, which is largely run and moderated by users like yourself, ideas are best posted on the Prusa Github pages where the product / software developers track their updates!

You are absolutely right. It's not pertinent.

Navenine has a problem/question, I don't have my Prusa anymore. But I'm trying to help this user with ideas that might help this person.

And you? Any idea?

Yes - posted above. Alternatively, the OP can post a feature request over on Github where the devs have a much better chance of seeing the request.
