Re: Improved fan shroud / nozzle

Would this be a good forum thread to ask for input on a 40mm flow fan conversion of the stock pressure blower fan? I'm not happy with the noise and lack of space for modding and was extremely happy with my 40mm upgrade to break fan.

Right forum, wrong thread. Look here: http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/improvements-f14/extruder-fan-specification--t1524.html

Try this.

Don't know if I have taken enough off, and it is very rough...

Peter

It fits my Mk2s, thank you!

FYI, I modified a 60mm parts cooling fan bracket from thingiverse to fit with your fan shroud. It works but needs some optimization, will post it on thingiverse in a few days when I get it tweaked. Anyone in a bind, send me a PM and I can send you the beta version.

Re: Improved fan shroud / nozzle

figured I'd share what I'm using. Never had issues with the default shroud on the mk2s but I hate that you can't see the nozzle from the front of the printer.

I found one and modified it: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2517325

Fits the mk2s and with a silicone sock on it. Printed it in PLA and it's been a week now without any deformation which is surprising but I'll keep using it since it works.

overhangs are great. pulled a 50mm bridge without issue. I don't like the vent design but results are good regardless. Best of all I can watch it print from the front, yay!

So would you say this design helps with part cooling at all over stock or is the benefit largely the ability to see the parts being printed more easily?

Also, has anyone tried annealing PLA-printed parts for heat resistance? Or is trying to compensate for the shrink/warp factor problematic? I don't really have a good way to print ABS...

Hi,
Just wondering did you have to modify the extruder cover to fit this fan?

Re: Improved fan shroud / nozzle

It looks like modding is required. I'd do it but that's because I have serious warping going on.

Considering the mod needed, I might just make a new extruder-body with said mount as Screwyluie designed.

Re: Improved fan shroud / nozzle

I thought I should move my part cooling nozzle repair here as respond to another post was off topic and belongs here.
My nozzle melted and crashed badly, when trying to bend back, the mount tab snapped off. I ran with ABS glue and Scotch tape for 3 or 4 prints then decided I should merge MK3 with my replacement plans. Here are the results. Original thread can be found here.

Already covered in mentioned thread, the design to share for all MK2 owners. MK2.5 obviates this effort somewhat, but I needed it today not whenever MK2.5 finally got shipped. As MK2 and MK2S nozzle weak structurally and poor at flow coverage, I took what I could from marketing material and rolled it into my emergency replacement mod. As of version 3, the design includes:

  • Easy swap design for Volcano upgrade

  • Reinforced right mounting tab for extruder-cover

  • Truncated nozzle skirt area from extruder-cover part

  • Roughly match MK3 nozzle design

  • Flow optimized with discreet intake ducting for central air bias with surrounding assist airflow based on forum member provided

  • Requires 2 25mm M3 socket screw with washers

  • Desiquintans article on cooling tests

I've stopped at third iteration as there seems little to gain from further development. Below is a video trying to compare version 1 and 3. Airflow was slower on v3 test as v1 test was too much to see flow detail.

    Mounting requires truncated extruder-cover part.

Here is a comparison of the two side by side.

STL can be found at Thingiverse.

Thanks for the reply sorry i did't see this until now it took me ages but i ended up tracking down the original one and the guy who made it also had the stl of the extruder cover.
Your new shoud design looks awesome and the airflow seems really effective, can you still see the nozzle with this?

Nope. Can't see squat. I did come up with that "card" mounding system so me and others could try other designs. At the moment, there are three versions being tested but all are alpha while Nozzle Semicircle v3 is my daily. Still logging notes from adopters of v3 for v4. As it is, v3 works better than stock in two key ways that made the print worth my time. Rear part cooling, much stronger resisting or deflecting part crashes.

    Other nozzle cards:

  • Stock simulate testing nozzle

  • Volcano ready semicircle nozzle

  • Side only nozzle

I would love it if Prusa releases Mk3 fan shroud early so we can adapt it to Mk2S.

MK3/MK2.5 head parts are not compatible with MK2 or MK2S. As the new head has Bondtech, Noctua 40mm and filament sensors that change everything, the mounting for MK3 nozzle is totally different. Early access would be moot and adaption would be a waste of filament unless like myself, something broke or you're making a hybrid custom Frankenstein's monster printer...in which case, I have some STL files you may be interested in.

    Thanks Peter,
I just finished printing it and it fits my MK2S perfectly,
I have been using it to print some parts out and it does seem to help with the bridging, still need to run more tests.

printed with Prusa ABS that I had left over from the MK2S upgrade kit.

supports: Yes, only from build plate.
    Rafts: No
    layer height: 0.20 mm

notes, I did turn on the "detect thin wall" setting but that may not be needed.
some curling on the the edges but with ABS that is expected, PLA such may not do this.

here are some pics of it

Re: Improved fan shroud / nozzle

Working on a replacement for my Surround MK3 lookalike nozzle. It didn't perform any better than stock for Benchy in PLA, specifically, back cooling is a problem for stock MK2s and likely MK3 as well. So, I designed this...

I'm trying to roll in everything I've learned in these forums but not using anyone else's files because that is cheating. This is a prototype so I have to test durability, ease of assembly, ease of print, heat resistance and cooling performance front and rear. But I have high hopes.

    Update: Printed and testing.

Amphi nozzle v1 has slightly better rear cooling. Much better air flow though.

Original nozzle surface only looks smoother, it is actually scalloped while worst looking Amphi nozzle is smooth but surface finish is more patchy.

This nozzle looks cool. Will it be compatible with the 40mm Noctua fan mod?

Yes, it would be. But, yes a 40mm version is in progress as well but priority is to assist stock Mk2s owners with aft cooling missing in stock nozzle.

Update: Looks like two head radial part fan duct held up OK to 8 hrs ABS print. Also quick-and-dirty 40mm two headed axial fan duct print attempt in progress. The model is sloppy as hell but I couldn't stand the radial fan noise for my own machine. This will likely never be placed live due to how sloppy and specific the fitments are to all my mods but hopefully the photos can add to ideas in this thread.

Ok my mistake. I meant will it be compatible with the Noctua fan mod for the HotEnd, as this take up some space on the left.

By the way. Is a 40mm axial fan working for the fan ducts? Usually radial fans can supply significantly higher air pressure than axial fans

    @Tobias
I hope so, I just ordered an extra one relying on CFM rating, couldn't find any pressure ratings for 50mm blower so bit of a gamble though I'll live with whatever I get as I find blower fan at full chat to be intolerable.

The radial nozzle design should fit easily around stock break fan (30mm). As for Noctua, I'm rocking Noctua NF-A4x20 with m own adapter duct on my rig. Fit is purposefully tight thinking rattle was coming from design error, turns out there is slop in both Noctua and Stock radial fan when place off axis from lateral movement. Yeah, that issue is something I've just let go of. A note of caution, I designed with two conditions, stock 30mm fan in default location or my adapter with either 10 or 20mm thick 40mm Noctua fans. It should go without saying but, it will likely not fit any other adapter.
