folding enclosure for MKS2

I have created folding enclosure for my Prusa i3 MKS2. Using 10mm Al tubes. Joints are designed and printed by myself. Cover is a fire retardant fabric from outside, mylar film sheet from inside. Front window from a kind of transparent plastic sheet (i guess polyethylene). Size 60x60x60cm.
Sewed by myself and as you can see that I am not a tailor ;-). But it works like charm. It reaches 40°C when printing ABS. No problem with ABS anymore.

That looks like a fantastic idea. Especially the fire retardant bit.

Great looking design - your sewing skills are better than mine 😉 .

Are the joints held together with some kind of cam lock mechanism? Would you be willing to share the STL files for the joints (or even better, the files from whatever software you designed them with)? Not sure if I'd build the enclosure but I'm interested in your design.

Re: folding enclosure for MKS2

Stupid question...Is the 60X60X60cm inside or outside measurements?

Thanks,

Neal

thank you guys

@Neal > Measurements
60cm is between the walls inside, respectively between outer sides of opposite joints. Base plate - which is not necessary is 60x60cm.
The walls are less then 1mm thick.

@Kevin > Joints
Yes that's correct, a cam lock mechanism. Tubes can be easily fixed and released by the lever. I used Autodesk Inventor, but can be easily modeled in Fusion 360. Find STL files attached. I designed more cams with different lift. For AL tubes, Cam A is good. Take B or C for wood.
Joints are printed with PLA 25% infill, axes with diagonal positioned hinge follows Z printer axes. Works also with ABS. I didn't test other materials yet. I recommend Cams ABS 100% infill.
... and you need a screw metric M3 with nut and flat head 20mm long to mount the cam

Tubes are excellent to attach a camera. Currently working on a camera holder and Raspi enclosure. And lot of other ideas in a head.
Thought about glass fiber fabric from inside, but it is a mess to work with. I believe, with fire retardant fabric and mylar it is quite safe enough.
What do you think?

I have a tent like enclosure based on shower curtain lined with Mylar, it gets to a sustained about 52°C when ambient is 20°C printing ABS. I'm guessing our heat disparity is heat loss from your base? Mine is suspended on rubber feet and under that is another layer of Mylar and shower curtain...but mine is not so portable. 😆

You may be right if the tent isn't attached to the base. Also door doesn't have velcro fully around. Base is 15mm plywood. But i didn't test it for maximum values. It actually reaches 42C - measured in the middle of the box, which I find as sufficient for the ABS.
Is your enclosure sealed tightly ?

It isn't hermetically sealed, but it is quite good at holding fumes in. I forgot to mention, I wrapped it in 3 layers of beach towels to dampen sound but are loosely hung. I estimate improve about +4 but are surprisingly good at reducing noise.

Then it's clear. Beach towels are great in heat insulation and sound absorption. Especially from terry cloth fabric. 😀

@jimoo
Towels are OK, but unlike your design, my setup is very much not fireproof. Got a very loud fire alarm to cut through the towels for Christmas, sorry don't know model, brand is First Alert. It is super cute, like mix of an albino penguin, bat, and Robocop about the size of a golf ball.

Yea the alarm egg looks cute. I've found it on Amazon. But what was the cause of the alarm?

Re: folding enclosure for MKS2

PLA ejected with PC eject script. Lots of smoke, screaming robots and adrenaline but no harm done. PLA is oddly pleasant when decomposing, accidental maple syrup incense basically. ABS burning is a different experience all together but that had nothing to do with enclosures or midget robot penguins.

screaming robots penguins better than screaming next door neighbors 😀
does PC stand for polycarbonate? Whats your experience, how successful are you in printing with PC?

btw: I checked out your webpage - the bike is absolutely awesome! I'm not designer but cooperated with Kinazo design studio on the first printed enduro bike project www.kinazo.com

Re: folding enclosure for MKS2

Thanks brother, yeah that thing is old, was part of my entry portfolio. Nice eBike too man.
Yes, it was Rigid Ink polycarbonate. Haven't figured it out yet unfortunately so no recipe to share. MK may just not be able to hit the right nozzle temperatures. Rigid Ink advises 310°C which as you know is 15°C more than MK's max safe temp. Without, PC is extremely difficult to predict extrusion but does print, though the results are only a little stronger than PETG.

We both have thermally insulated enclosures so have no issues with de-lamination or curling others have reported. Magigoo is also a great release agent making PC removal and adhesion as easy as working with PLA, surprising considering all the fear-mongering with PC. Below are images from another post but I'll put here to help you decide.

I'd say, PC with MK requires a lot of "dedication" aka money.
To do this right, you'd need...

  • PT100 upgrade for E3D hotend and all the firmware headaches involved (can be done though, it is in current firmware code)

  • MOSFET linked to mini-RAMBo fed by own power source to reach V6 max temp of 400°C. mini-RAMBo will melt if you send that much power through it I have heard. 295°C already causes thermal runaway for some boards though I run sock and insulated bed so haven't had issues.

  • Replace all extruder plastics with PC (chicken and egg right)

  • Convection oven capable of 120°C. Note the bubbles on my print, not dried.
  • After one can get enough temperature, then dialing in and using PC parts is worth while.

    hello brother
    prints look quite good, some oozing but its always an issue by high temp plastics. I tried some PA/Nylon, but your prints looks much more better. Great hack on Prusa, lot of work done.

    Thanks Aaron, I was going to tap that vane when I'd given up figuring it out on my own. Might be time.

    Sorry Jimoo, off topic.
