Re: Extruder fan specification ?

Had to enlarge the holes some and I need even shorter screws, other than that it looks promising! Haven't got my fan yet though, so it will probably arrive tomorrow.

Will print one in PETG and 0.2mm layer height now.

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

I look forward to printing one of these myself. I see this as a hot item as the fan is the loudest item left for my noise modification mods.

Dimensions PNG

and an 8 inch (200mm) or greater caliper is recommended.

i'll just verify that it works as it should before uploading to Thingiverse!

Im really not a good friend with PETG, do you guys think that PLA+ will be heat resistant enough?
The tunnel have a decent cooling anyway..

Hi

These are the official v6 fan specs:

12 Volts DC
Size: 30x30x10mm
Lead lengh: 1m
4.1 cfm

Its cool what you are doing with the nocuta fan 🙂 Where can i get one ?

Thanks!

Here are a couple of places you can get the Noctura fan: Amazon.com and NewEgg.com.

Mmmmmh, this is just brilliant !

I had a look on the fan spec, and if I'm not mistaken, it's an equivalent to 4.7 cfm. I wonder if the profile of the duct may or not degrade the flow, should some kind of foil be needed to guide the air and reduce turbulences ?

And I was wondering about a protocol to evaluate the efficiency of the setup. Maybe comparing the time to go from 200 °C to 50 °C, with the stock fan and your setup ? This should be a good indicator of the efficiency. I believe best case would be to have an equivalent time in both case.

It's about time to order a noctua fan I think 🙂

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

Since patrik.r hasn't released his model yet, I recreated it in OnShape first, then TinkerCAD for the final touches. I am using pegs on the 30mm face to plug into the X-Carriage, so no additional screws are necessary (great for those people who don't have spare screws). The pegs are slightly tapered so they start well and snug up the closer you get to the X-Carriage. I have printed with the adapter like this and it doesn't come off without some force. I've included a notch as a wire guide so the fan wires can be routed over the top of the adapter body and to the back where the old fan wires were routed. This also ensures that the wires don't get chewed on by the Z-axis lead screws when going to home. On the 40mm face, I've tapered the holes slightly so that it is easier to start the screws, and you can use the old M3x18 screws that you used for the 30mm fan to secure a Noctura 40mm fan. Do be aware that you don't want to tighten the Noctura down all the way since each corner has a gasket washer, just tighten it down, then loosen it so it is snug (this gives some extra noise reduction).

The spacing between the adapter and the left side of the X-axis is tight. There is about 2mm of clearance between the adapter and the left side when the X-axis is homed. It does not touch or interfere with that side in any way.

Wiring the Noctura fan was quite a challenge since the connector on the Rambo isn't compatible with any adapter packaged with the Noctura, and the adapters with the Noctura wouldn't fit inside of my Cable Chains. I ended up having to use 6 6" Extension Jumper wires secured by electrical tape at the joints to get everything working (3 for positive, 3 for negative).

I did print another one of these adapters while using the Noctura and experienced no jams in the hot-end, which tells me, it is getting enough cooling, and the print turned out great!

Print settings for the model are as follows: 0.1 layer height, 0% infill (that's right NO infill), 4 perimeters. 4 top and bottom layers, no supports. All the strength is contained in the perimeters and top/bottom layers. Estimated print time is 3.5 hours. Gotta try and keep the X-Carriage mass to a minimum.

I can't believe how whisper quiet printing is now! It is awesome! When the part cooling fan is going, I still hear a fan noise, but overall, my fan noise while printing has gone down by about 50%. I'm not going to change out my part cooling fan because I do enjoy it's cooling, but for materials like PET, ABS and the like where you don't want the part cooling fan, you can actually hear yourself think while printing.

My brother happens to be a rocket engineer, so I sent the design to him, and he verified that this "mod" wont decrease the cooling.
I wanted him to do a cool CFD simulation on it, but it wasn't needed. The cooling might even be better since the tunnel goes from large circular hole to a smaller circular hole, like a trumpet.

My kids are sick so I'm home with them, thats why I haven't been able to by the correct screws and pick up the Noctua fan at the post office...
Im uploading the STL to thingiverse now, so you can try it out if you want!

I've been working on my LED strip holder, which now can take two panels: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1781519

wohoooo Awsome!

I was just planning to actually cut the 30x30mm fan's cable and solder on the Noctua fan to that, I dont want to untangle my cable stock if I dont need to! The pegs was a smart thing! I would be scared that they would break some time and crash a lot of stuff but maybe they will hold! Its not alot of weight so.

I didn't want to splice the 30mm fan cord in case something went wrong and I needed to fall back on it. The tapered pegs definitely hold secure enough for my purposes. They taper from 2.5mm to 2.8mm. And Yeah, get that plastic breaks and the pegs could be considered fragile, but think of it this way: They are not following the Z-axis, they are at an angle so the layer strength is greater. Sure they could break off in the X-Carriage if you aren't careful, but I've tried to mitigate that by only making them 4mm long. The holes they fit into have room for 8mm. If ever you need to take off the Extruder cover, you will have to remove this fan adapter or risk breaking the pegs as you mention.

Why don't you print one of my models out and test it out? I noticed you took down your stream link.

I just started a 48 hour print to print parts for a CowTech 3D Scanner. The adapter is staying put quite well.

Here is the file! http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1826549

I'll print your file as well and test it out! Still need my Noctua fan though, will probably pick it up during the weekend.
Got a new external IP, I've updated the DNS now, so it should work anytime soon. Its up 24/7, it can be dark as hell during nights though hehe

Printing my adapter now in PETG, without supports, heavy overhang! Seems to work out fine so far.

I see why you are having problems. I think you should orientate the adapter so that the 40mm mount surface is on the print bed. I've orientated mine this way and I have no problems.

problems? I have no problems 🙂
Printing it the other way around wouldnt be better i think, since I've over designed some parts of it 🙂

Allright, you got me. Downloaded and starting to print. And ordered the fan. Actually two fans, for two MK2 extruders. Damn.
