Extruder fan specification ?

Hi,

I would like to replace the little fan by a quiet version. So I need to know what are the spec of the fan used by the extruder, especially the cfm (m3 / h) to be sure that the air low will be at least equivalent.

Does anybody knows that ? Josef ? Voltech ?

I'm like Jon Snow, I know nothing.

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

http://wiki.e3d-online.com/wiki/E3D-v6_Troubleshooting

"The use of the supplied 30mm fan and duct is highly recommended, the supplied fan has adequate airflow (4-5 CFM) and the duct is specifically designed to aim that airflow at the fins of the heatsink."

BUT. Dont underestimate cooling of the V6 hotend. I tried Sunon cooling fan with 4.63CFM and it wasnt enough. Not enough cooling = heatbreak clogging.

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

I'd love to hear if anyone has redesigned the hot end body and cover for a 40mm fan. I really want to use a Noctura 40mm fan instead of the 30mm version.

and an 8 inch (200mm) or greater caliper is recommended.

Thanks for the pointer, I didn't think to check e3d wiki.

4-5 CFM is equivalent to ~8 m3/hour if I'm not mistaken, so the 40 mm noctua fan is just on the edge to provide the right flow, but that need and adaptor which is not easy to place and design, being on the side of the MK2, and that could degrade the native air flow :/

mmmmh, not that simple ...

Well.. Redesigning the fan on the extruder was one of my first toughs as well. What about moving the hotend fan perpendicular to the other fan and a duct to direct the flow to the ed3V6 body? The only drawback is hiding the other fan..

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

I'm not opposed to having the hotend fan on the front. The part cooling blower fan could be stretched out in front of the hotend cooling fan too. It would also be feasible to use a 2nd Noctura 40mm fan for the part cooling function. I've seen other 3D printers' designs about placement of the part cooling fans, and most of them stick out from the front.

I'd also be OK with having the hotend body and cover rotated 90 degrees so I can mount a Flexion extruder to my MK2.

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

I got E3d's 30x30x10 fan. Its 12v 0.1amp rather then 0.15amp from Prusa. I cannot tell any differance, still just as noisy. So I went back to the Prusa one straight away.

Be good to know if anyone find a less noisy one with a good airflow.

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

Im working on a fan duct for a 40x40mm fan, the Noctua should arrive today so I can test it.
Not sure why I'm doing it though, if I can get the noise down even further without loosing the cooling level needed that would be great!

Anyhow, this is how it looks atm, I will modify the angle just a slight bit (its JUST touching the Y carriage at the end stops now..) and I will resize the holes for the screws. This will ofc have a negative result on the airflow, going from a "in your face" approach to a more angled one, but since the Noctua seems more effective I hope it will be enough.

Patrik I was *just* looking at this problem today, and I am quite eager to see what your results are. 🙂

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

Looks like an interesting solution. I do know there is very little room for an adapter. I've finally found a decent way to redesign The Extruder Body, Extruder Cover, and Fan Nozzle. So far, I'm basing my model on this.

I'd love to see pictures with the fan and this shroud adapter in place when the X axis is homed and the X-Carriage is touching the X Endstop, even if the Z axis is up a bit. I do have 4 Noctura 40mm fans (I like having spares).

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

Yeah I don't really "need" this mod, I just suddenly wanted to design something 😀
So I'm not really interested in changing more stuff on the extruder body if it isn't needed.

I did a more clean design, changed the angle some more, and made sure that all the holes for screws are in the correct diameter.
I think it will fit now, left to see if the cooling is enough...

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

If this works (cooling aside), I'll abandon my mods to the X-Carriage.

One thing your pictures don't take into account is the lead screws on the Z-axis motors. If you have a model you want me to print and test, I'm more than willing to do so and provide feedback.

If I think about the same screws you talk about, it shouldnt be a problem. This fan duct doesnt expand further down than the "HOT" front fan cover.
But I might have missed some, testing will tell 😀

Already printing the current version! 0.3mm PLA Premium+ eSun
Will probably print the final one in PETG

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

Patrik, that looks quite promising, I like it. It would be maybe better to tilt the fan a bit up to let it suck the air from above and not create unwanted draft near the heatbed. What do you think?

If you would tilt it a bit, I would recommend no more than 15 degrees. You don't want to blow too much dust at the model. And yeah, a slight angle would be nice because cold air falls, warm air rises.

I started with a slight up-tilted design, but it caused some modeling problems, so after an hour or two struggeling I changed it to what it is now.

Re: Extruder fan specification ?

One thing I do see about the current design as it is printed, you will need to use shorter M3 screws.

Yep, I have a nice collection of them 😀 In all possible sizes! Short ones will be needed for the fan as well!
