Enclosure & LED lighting

Just wanted to share what I completed this weekend. Made from 3/4 plywood strips, plexiglass, and IKEA lights. I made a 20" by 20" by 17" tall platform for the machine to sit in

Love that setup. I'm looking at unique lighting as well.
Just a note though, as I was informed a few days ago, your filament out in the open like that is bad. It will suck the humidity out of the air and ruin it. You'll begin to see air bubbles and failed prints. I've seen some sweet air tight containers and you could easily extend you're entire enclosure similar. See this for example http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:743280

Wow, great!
Do you know how much that did cost? Does it dampen noise a lot?

looks great!

Ive got mine in an enclosure too. Do you think the power supply needs to be outside the enclosure?

Printing abs it does get fairly warm almost hot!

Re: Enclosure & LED lighting

Glad everyone likes it!! Thanks!

Steve - Thanks for the heads up on the rolls. I really like that tupperware container set up. I've printed with ABS, PLA and PET and I love using PET by far. Much better strength (not as brittle as ABS, and doesn't warp at all like PLA). Maybe I'm doing something wrong with the other ones but my PET is printing amazingly. Just curious, how long would it take for the plastic to start absorbing humidity? They've only been out for a week.

Alexander - The whole box is made from 3/4" plywood (2" inch strips ripped and then glued and nailed together to make right angles). I had all this laying around so wood cost was 0$ for me (plywood for you would be between $30-$50, 2'x'2 for the bottom and then 2"x strips ripped for the supports on the side. The base is 20"x20" and the box matches those dimensions. The height of the box is 17". Plexiglass was $10 a sheet and I needed 4 and had them cut it to 18"x17" in the store (Much easier to have them do it!) Lights are from Ikea and were $29.99. These were the only lights that I could mount in 4 corners of the box and not get any shadows.

It does dampen the noise a little bit. These machines aren't that loud to begin with so just closing the door to the room its in works just as good.

Tom - The power supply gets warm to the touch for me. I have a thermometer mounted on the side of the box and the max it read was 106F for the air temp. Most of the time I crack the door so it doesn't get too warm. I'm more concerned about the main electronics board. Maybe someone from PRUSA can talk to that? As far as what temp the electronics are good to?

I tried ABS a couple of times an it was a little warm!

My plan is to install a small fan with a duct that will pull air from the room through all the cracks in the enclosure and blow it out a window. I'm a little concerned about plastic fumes which is why I would do that.

Re: Enclosure & LED lighting

That looks awesome! Could we get some pictures with the lights on so we can see the construction? I've pondered about building an enclosure myself due to all the hazard with fumes, especially for ABS.

And it's not that bad do have the filament out for a week (depends on the humidity of where you live though), but I would advise to get some ziplock bags and desiccants from Ebay (cheapo from china and free shipping) and then store the rolls you're not using in these bags.

Re: Enclosure & LED lighting

That is really cool with the colored LED lights! I made my own enclosure using IKEA tables (very cheap) and bought a LED light from Home Depot which honestly was the most expensive part of the build. I will look into the IKEA LED's for sure.

Great Job!

Looks good everyone I need to do something like this. My ABS project stink up the house to much. How do you guys venting it outside?.... ABS stinks plus its toxic... I was thing just having a window open but that is cold in the winter. There are pros to ABS. The fumes is not one of them

Steve

Some makes of ABS are better than others. I use the Prusa ABS and can't smell anything. Having a window open near to the printer at this time of year is not a good idea; too much draft and failed prints.

Currently printing with PLA...
