E3D Titan extruder upgrade kit from e3donline.com
Hey guys,
E3D now offers their new Titan extruder as an upgrade Kit for Prusa i3 machines: http://e3d-online.com/Prusa-i3-Upgrade-Kit
It looks nice and seems straight forward to install. They even have a note for Original Kit owners:
Owners of Prusa i3 machines purchased directly from Josef Prusa himself please note:
Josef Prusa chose E3D as the new hotend of choice in late 2015 and ships Lite6 with the Original Prusa i3 kit. Full V6 is drop in compatible and can be purchased, precompiled firmware for Full V6 is available for download. Titan requires user modification of stock firmware settings.
Frome the wiki I take it that its only the E-steps that need to be changed if you're running the V6 all metal firmware, because that extruder has a 1:3 transmission compared to the 1:1 transmission of the Original Kit. This doesn't need new firmware compilation, since e-steps can be set anywhere via gcode.
So there seem to be only two steps necessary to make this work:
- install prusa all metal V6 firmware from the downloads section
- adjust E-steps to match new transmission (can be done via gcode)
I've ordered their kit and will give an update once I get my hands on it.
My main reason for changing the extruder is that I wanted to upgrade to a full V6 hotend. Nice opportunity to fiddle with the extruder, too.

Great, Ive been looking at this.
Please let us know how you get on 😉
Re: E3D Titan extruder upgrade kit from e3donline.com
Let us know how it went. I'd be interested as to how well this works, as I am having problems printing xt-cf20 carbon fiber filament and I think it's mainly the temperature. I am also playing with the idea to upgrade the printer to full v6 and titan extruder.
cheers
Guillaume

Definitely tell us how that works out, I don't see e ever having a need for a different extruder (yet! :D) I'm still curious to see how it works out for you.

I got the Titan, will assemble everything this week and share my experience with you 🙂
Re: E3D Titan extruder upgrade kit from e3donline.com
The E3D Titan extruder is only for clone users, and not for "original" users.
From the E3D web site:
Owners of Prusa i3 machines purchased directly from Josef Prusa himself please note:

Should you chose to go ahead with the Titan, then there are quite a few firmware amendments required: http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/prusa-i3-kit-building-calibrating-first-print-main-f6/titan-extruder-probelms-t850-s20.html#p6307

The E3D Titan extruder is only for clone users, and not for "original" users.
Peter, why would that kit only be for clone-users? Every i3-owner, original version or not, whose extruder-mounting is comparable to ours, would have to make those changes (in gcode and maybe firmware).
Re: E3D Titan extruder upgrade kit from e3donline.com
Seems to me that E3D are saying that the Titan extruder has been designed to allow clone users to install an E3D hot end; they clearly state that the V6 is a direct replacement on the "original", hence implying that the Titan is not required.
Only my interpretation of their words...

Re: E3D Titan extruder upgrade kit from e3donline.com
Ah I see 🙂
Well, since the Titan is marketed as an upgrade extruder for any viable printer (they encourage you to design mounting systems for other printers) and called superior to direct drive extruders, I got the impression that it is thought to be for any i3 printer.
I think with their note they just want you to know that for the E6 hotend that comes with the kit, there is a special firmware from Jo Prusa for it. And then then they only mention modification of stock firmware settings. That could very well only mean the e-steps (temp and e-steps are the only settings you have to change for any printer according to the wiki).
Anyway, I'll post updates on my progress this week.
