[SOLVED] SketchUp Model Over Extruding
Is there some well known gotcha when making simple parts in SketchUp and then slicing them in Slic3rPE and printing them? I printed a PLA benchy yesterday and it came out perfectly. Then today I designed a 12mm cube with a cone removed from it in SketchUp and when it prints, it over extrudes so badly the print fails after 3-4 layers. Thanks for the help!

SketchUp is not known for generating clean STL files. Can you try using a different CAD program?
Re: SketchUp Model Over Extruding
A thought, the part is very small (0.5" cube) perhaps the layers are still molten when the printer attempts to print on top of them? Is Slic3r smart enough to prevent this? As for using different design programs, I can but there is a significant learning curve.
EDIT: The more I look at things the more I suspect it isn't over extrusion but rather the previous layer not being set before starting the next layer.

It's possible. You can set a minimum layer time in Slic3r, or just print two cubes on opposite corners of the print bed (the extra travel time allows it to cool).
Re: SketchUp Model Over Extruding
Make sure you are exporting the stl with the "binary" and "mm" options. I have printed many simple objects from Sketchup files with no issues.
Re: SketchUp Model Over Extruding
Adding a second object fixed my issues 100%. Both copies printed perfectly. I am still confused as to why the chimney on benchy isn't an issue but this larger (than the chimney) part was. Seems like the chimney would be even more problematic yet it printed perfectly. Still much to learn! Thanks for the help!

I get the learning curve daunt.
Try Tinkercad. Free, and extremely fast & easy to learn (If I can learn it in a few minutes, anyone can... 😆 ). I use it for most everything.
That's "MISTER Old Fart" to you!
