Repeat print fail--please help!

Caveat: I'm only in about my second week of printing. The library I work at owns the printer.

I am so super frustrated right now! I've tried to print this four times and it's failed every time:

I can get the lid and the knob with fairly no problem. The box, however, dies a very messy, spaghetti death.

I've updated the firmware. I've recalibrated I don't know how many times. I've adjusted the nozzle height. I've increased the temperature of the heatbed. And it's still not looking right. (It's the Original i3 MK3 on the most recent firmware.)

I'm using PLA. The first few times, I was using MakerBot filament and the last time I tried the Prusa. I'm using the pre-set PLA settings (215/60). I've tried different levels of quality and infill. (I tried draft/0.35 and 15% to reduce print time, though.)

The first time, I left it overnight and had spaghetti when I came back to it the next morning. The next time, I caught it at "crash detected" where it seemed to be shifting the model (and dragging into the existing layers). I researched and found there seemed to be a problem with crash detection, so I turned that off. It failed around the same point the next time. (It clearly still prints valid layers before turning into messy spaghetti.)

I've both simply generated the gcode with PrusaControl and sliced it with the Slic3er. The creator has a Prusa and someone else successfully made it, so I don't think it's the file.

It's printed a few small things intermittently with not-disastrous results. But you can see the zig-zag of the filament lines and that doesn't seem like it should be the case? The first few things I've printed were totally melted smooth where they were on the heatbed. The last time I tried to print, there was a grinding noise that I thought was the nozzle going into the bed, so I just turned it off. (Though it had finished a print minutes before fine.) [I've attached pictures of the last successful print. It was 20% infill at optimal height.)

I suspect I need to adjust the nozzle height, but I have NO IDEA what it's supposed to be. I've tried from about -0.495 to -0.6. Do I need to bring it out of the negative? I know there (apparently) can't be one setting, but an idea of what the range should be would be nice!

I'm so lost! Doesn't seem like Prusa is the easiest printer to learn on!

I think you need to be printing closer to the bed, so in your case something like -0.7 (for example). The negative values just indicate that it is an (additional) offset from the nozzle to the bed, which is correct.

Try printing something like this to get the z level correct, https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:34558
This will also show how level your bed is.

Cleanliness is next to godliness

If i have prints fail in succession. I give the pei a really good clean with washing up detergent and water.usually applied by sponge. With clean paper tissues to dry.

Thank you! It's definitely hard to tell from the little zig-zag it prints.

I will try that!

I routinely clean it with alcohol and I've used acetone + alcohol after printing a large job or an epic fail. But I didn't know you could just wash it like that!

Thank you!
