Poor surface finish on thin (2 perimeters) wall

Hi,

I'm printing the Kraga Models 'Kodo' aircraft and am having issues of poor surface finish on the outside of the fuselage parts; the inside is great! Fuselage generally uses 2 perimeter thickness with no infill.

Prusa i3 Mk3 latest firmware, extrusion multiplier and nozzle temp calibrated. Using Prusa silver PLA at between 205C and 215C, bed @60C. Tried Slic3r Prusa edition at both 'Optimal 0.15mm' and 'Fast 0.2mm' layer heights on the 'Prusa PLA' settings. Also tried a single part or multiple fuselage parts on the bed at once; there's 5 of them.

Also have tried the S3D fff settings from 3D Printed Planes' 'Spitfire' which for that model works well on single-thickness wall and PLA. No real difference between either Prusa Slic3r or S3D slicers.

Structurally the parts are coming-out OK as the fuselage is joined / reinforced with carbon rod stringers but I'd like to improve the looks a bit, and as it will be a flying model I'd prefer not to fill and sand, to keep weight down. I'm very happy with the Mk3 in general and these issues aren't common to all prints, so for me, it's not necessarily a machine issue, but very willing to accept help!

Image is inverted - sorry!

those are definitely restart/retract artifacts, so I'd try getting rid of as many retracts as possible, playing with coast settings, and/or aligning the seams or moving them to a less visible side of the model.

Thanks for the reply, with apologies for not responding since you posted it! I'll have a look at retract and stop/start settings, but in the absence of other ideas I tried slowing down the outer perimeter from 45 to 20 mm/sec and it's much better. Not perfect, but acceptable for the job. Anyway, thanks again.

Re: Poor surface finish on thin (2 perimeters) wall

Hello,

I only wanted to put out a "same here".

I'am using Cura 3.1.0
With the following settings: (PLA but i got the same issues when printing PET)
Outer wall: 40mm/s
Inner wall: 80mm/s
Cooling: 100%
Retraction: 0,8mm and 35mm/s
Temperature: 215°C
Bed: 60°C
No coasting

It feels like a "micro clog" of the nozzle after retractions or short stopps of the extruder.
