Opinions Please, Printer or Filament?

Hi all,

So I have had an odd occurrence with my most recent print, see attached photos (adhesion 1&2.) About five hours into the print you can see the layers started forming loose adhesion.

This is on a MK3s, standard PLA profile on Hatchbox Gold Silk PLA, 2 perimeters, 5% infill, printing at 90% speed. .15 layer height.

So, I have had some issues with this today with poor adhesion, but in my personal experience that is par for teh course for Silk PLA from Hatchbox, pretty to look at, but structurally weak. But this is a first, I have never experienced this before this moment. For comparison please see the twist box I printed earlier this week, it was the last project before this one (Twist 1, I have the other side in white PLA, but image limit got me.)

I have printed this model out roughly eight times previously and never had this issue. The last time was about three weeks ago and I haven't touched the roll since. I keep my unused rolls in a sealed box at about 10% humidity.

Thanks for your help in advance.

I have another roll of the same stuff so I am reprinting now, I only have maybe 10% of the original roll left, so I hope it was just a bad tail end...

Bad underextrusion, if it continues, try a cold pull.

Thanks! I will try that if I see the reprint start going sideways on me.

Edit:

On second thought, no reason to throw good money after bad, I did three pulls and ran about a foot of cleaning filament through just in case. Ill also run it at 210/205 as I recall it does better at that. Fingers crossed.

Ok, so I am still getting the same results sadly. I re sliced the model, and even tried .2 layer height in case that would help but I am getting the same, any other suggestions? Now one thing that was new to me, and maybe this is the issue. Transitioning from the first layer the temp drops from 210 to 197 then rebounds from that..... that is newer to me, I usually see it drop maybe 5 degrees then bounce back, maybe this is normal and I caught some weird behavior before.

I had this issue with cura and switch to Slic3r. I did a cold pull and adjusted my Z. It solved itself. It was prbably the setting I used in Cura. Iam still not 100% sure what it was.

Nozzle temp dropping can be fan and shroud related; when the fan turns on you get a nozzle temp drop, and it depends on the shape of the part. A hot end sock can help with that. But higher up the part you shouldn't see such dramatic drops/changes. If the temps on the display are stable as the extruder is moving, it's unlikely it is a control issue.

Next is filament specs. Some filaments like hotter temps. If raising the print temp 15c doesn't help. Next. 🙁

Presuming a 0.4 mm nozzle. Even some of Prusa's filled PLAs are not printing well on MK3/S's ... something in the material settles out at higher print speeds and plugs the nozzle during a print. Higher print temps usually help; if that doesn't do it, then halving print speeds usually does. If printing infill at 200, reduce it to 100. Perimeters from 40 down to 20.

I appreciate the reply, I have not been using a sock as of late, I got a really bad jam while using one (probably unrelated, but illogical fears ya know.) I will throw it back on and see if that helps. I apologize for missing that bit of info, you are spot on it is a .4mm nozzle.

I hesitate to move up 15c but Ill try it at half speed with normal settings and see if that produces anything better. I will say I am using a photo tent as a type of enclosure and the extruder motor was very hot the last time I was trying, I have had the printer turned off for the past couple of hours to let everything cool down and reset so I am going to start it up again and check my results.

An enclosure skews things... especially when quite a few folk who believe the E-Axis motor gets hot enough to deform PLA filament at the Bondtech gear. But a simple cold pull would prove it, or disprove it. If a pull doesn't show signs of filament deformation at the gear level, I'd think the motor isn't causing the problem.

I'd tend to agree, all the pulls I have done have come out clean. My current print *knock on wood* is doing ok, no signs of under extrusion. I covered a few bases with this one however, hotter temp, silicone sock, 75% speed..... I really like how the filament looks, but Hatchbox Silk has been a pain for me in several colors lol. I will say while making adjustments I loosened up the idler gear because I could see the extrusion coming out uneven when just extruding into air.

I dont want to Jinx it, but I think it was the tension on the gear, at least that seems most likely. I'll update as things progress :).

Re: Opinions Please, Printer or Filament?

For some reason, too much tension does seem to cause problems for some of the posts here. I have never noticed print problems with too tight, but on my printer the filament will twist and start jumping off the spool: a few wraps during a long unattended print would certainly foul things.
