NOOB, this is fun! (really!) heat bed question, PLA and speed

Hello all.

I googled the following, now want to know what you all think.

First off, this is so awesome I can hardly contain myself. I wanted a printer back when they were $10k back in 2005.

1.) So I have the heat bed on 70 degrees. It was 50 from the factory and I had a ton of issues with 50. I tried 55, then just said screw it and did 70.
70 has beengreat, BUT what do you all use for PLA? Really curious if there is a drawback to all the heat or if that is normal.

2.) PLA - I looked this up as well. I heard over long periods of time PLA will shrink or do other wonky things. Was that with all PLA or original old stuff made when it first came out? Is it really as durable as I believe it to be?

3.) Speed. I noticed bad things at print speed of 100% in the beginning stages, so I slow it down to 75% then up tp 100% after a base is costructed (or an hour). Is this normal?

4.) I hear a weird hissing noise from the head sometimes, like iron after steam is released from a clothing board..normal?

TIA,

you guys rock!

1. Bed temp usually depends on what filament you are using. I usually never go over 60 on PLA and some filaments are as low as 45.

2. PLA has changed over the last few years. As for shrinkage after a while...I just don't know.

3. You usually want to print the first layer, at least that much, at a slower speed than the rest of the print. Allows more stick time and to let you tweak the Z.

4. Hissing or a more crackling like sound. Like a bowl of Rice Krispies. Usually means your filament has absorbed moisture and needs drying.
