Need general tips on dealing with difficult PLA filament

Hello, not new to 3D printing but have mainly been using Prusament PLA on my MK3S+ for most projects, which just seems to work as long as the first layer is calibrated properly. However, I've been printing a project for a student using a bunch of different brands of PLA filament that seem to have slightly different properties. I was able to get the Sunlu Silk PLA filament to print properly by fiddling with some retraction settings. However, now I'm using an Elagoo PLA filament that has been giving me lots of trouble. Some blobbiness, stringing, catching pieces of the earlier layers and pulling on the model. I've basically had to take a break since I've had no success.

So, the question is, when confronted with a tricky PLA filament, what are some of the settings I should be looking to change? Should I be fiddling with temperature or retraction or some other setting? I don't know where to start experimenting.

Thanks!

I sometimes wish silk PLA had never been invented  ...

Generally different PLA's can be persuaded to work together by tweaking only the working temperatures.  Stringing and blobbing are usually signs the flament needs drying.

Cheerio,
