I want a thin layer near the bottom

I'm using variable layer thickness to get more detail at the top and bottom, in order to make fine detailed V grooves in the sides of a shelf board.

The top works wonderfully well, but I can't get rid of a thick layer at the bottom that messes it up. See screenshot.

I've added a raft, turned off elephant foot compensation, set the first layer thickness to .07mm, but nothing gets rid of the fat bottom layer.

Any ideas?

A first layer thickness of .07mm means that you need to squish the first layer that thin. Did you calibrate Z to be that fine? A typical Z first layer setting will achieve a perfect .2mm layer; if you need to come lower than that I guess you will have to lower the nozzle a further .13 in Z from the perfect setting. The printer won´t lower the nozzle lower than your calibration setting. A .07mm first layer sounds like a very ugly first layer with a .4mm nozzle and it sounds to me like an accident waiting to happen when the nozzle digs into the PEI sheet.

I try to give answers to the best of my ability, but I am not a 3D printing pro by any means, and anything you do you do at your own risk. BTW: I have no food for…

You can't go lower than 0.15mm for the 1st layer. The software endstop kicks in. You don't want one much thinner for adhesion and leveling purposes.

Evidently if you go lower than .15mm for the first layer it doesn't just limit to .15, but sets it up to your max thickness.

It would be nice if it just limited to what it can do, or failing that if it gave an explanation.

I solved the problem by redesigning so I could print from a different edge without too much support. Not the look I wanted, but it's tolerable.

Thanks!

I started my previous one with thanks, but an editing error jumped to the top and overwrote it away. Dratted big trackpads! That's my most common input error, my hand brushing a corner of the trackpad by accident.
