[HELP] I can't diagnose this z banding issue.

I'm having a heck of a time diagnosing this issue that only recently popped up.

Here is a video of the issue.

  • Printer: 3 different MK3s (.5mm nozzle)
  • Slicer: S3D
  • Settings: various changes to most parameters. Usually 247c/91c. 40mm/sec.
  • Enclosure: yes
  • Material: Sunlu PETG
  • Hotends: Both Dragonfly and E3D v6
  • Firmware: 3.8 or 3.9

The issue affects different models. Banding is usually 3mm-5mm. Different across different models.

Some models, like those with no infill and just 2mm thick walls (like a cup), don't have the banding issue.

Effect is on all faces.

First 20mm or so has this issue less.

I'm barely able to feel the banding with my finger, but it's there, albeit very slight.

Please let me know if you have any ideas.

Print with a less glossy filament and you won't notice it.  Or finish the part with matt paint.

Cheerio,

I haven't seen this for myself but I don't print ABS or PC for extended times. If I did, I'd probably reprint the whole hotend assembly in ASA or PC.

Okay, my last comment was meant to go to a different thread, sorry...

From your identical Reddit post I take it that this is happening on all your printers so it's not a mechanical issue. My guess is either it's infill shining through (easy to test by using a different type and/or infill density), or maybe you're using Variable layer height, which I have seen produce similar patterns on shiny filaments.

Can you post an image of the print?
