RE: First time printing ABS

I've found that ABS prints more consistently now that I have the enclosure.  Before I got the enclosure I would use the draft shield, which did help quite a bit.

I'm not that concerned about the stink.  I have the printer(s) in a home office and I just stay out of there most of the time if printing ABS.  'Hey, it smells like melting plastic in here.'  😉

I'm also sold on Layerneer as both a release agent and an adhesion helper.  On 'another network' there was some speculation that it's just repackaged hairspray, but I'm not sure about that.  I learned the hard way on one of my first ABS prints on the smooth sheet that a release agent is most helpful.  I got impatient and used a metal implement to pry the print loose and a few pieces of the sheet coating came off with it.  🙁

Yeah the layerneer stuff works well for abs.  I tend the just throw it on if I’m not sure lol.
Jury is out right now but I think the filter is ok for now.  If I were doing a three day print I’d probably move he probably Bree to where it could vent it

Huh.  The HEPA will not get any of the UFP that are so worrisome with 3d printing.  Great for dust and pollen, though!  Seems worthless to me for 3d printing purposes.  Charcoal will get some of the evil stink from ABS, but that depends on the charcoal, and how frequently you change it.  Not all charcoal is created equal, and charcoal will gladly vomit back up the nasty if left full.

I am really into this 3d printing hobby.  But, I am skipping ABS/ASA.

Not like I am some brainiac.  4 decade smoker, now stopped, but, stinky poison plastic seems really, really unnecessary.  At least, for much of my youth, cigarette smoking was cool.  I don't get that cool dude vibe from ABS.  And, others live in my house....  Sure, I smoke in the house, but I exhale out the window...

Charcoal and HEPA filters work enough to prevent nasal and pulmonary irritation.

Yes I agree.  Kind of why I’m probably going to move the printer

@ssill2

Nope, hair spray is easier to get a thin coat with uniformity.

Sure.  Perhaps a market for menthol ABS filament.

I do not agree.  There is no methanol released.

I really like ASA, especially for functional parts, I do however find that it doesn't have as nice of a finish as ABS, if that is also important to the project I use ABS it's still a very valid material, I don't see it going away anytime soon, and is absolutely worth getting command of.

@swiss_cheese

Very true.  It often has a rough or matte finish.
