First layer slipped, filament backed into extruder

Hello,
I was going for a long, 4 hr print. The first print came out great! No major problems. However I left and came back 2 hours later to find a glob of backed up filament that literally backed up into the extruder nozzle. This is our lab printer and I'd like some solutions how to fix this. No bed layer problems, just backed up extruder.

Re: First layer slipped, filament backed into extruder

Looks like loose nozzle or heat break. Probably need to replace the heater element if the wire broke though.

Not too terrible though. Remove the fan shroud to get a better look. Maybe go as far as removing the whole hotend. Use a heat gun to loosen the stuff up and remove it to start. After you get it clean you can find the instructions for tightening it all in the manual section. Sorry I don't know how to post a link to it.

Hope that helps,

Neal

If the thermistor and heater cartridge wires on the left of the hotend as viewed from the front aren't broken, there's hope. Raise Z to max and see if you can remove the orange part cooling fan. Heat up to print temp and try slowly and carefully pulling the gunk away. With any luck, it'll pop off leaving a residue that you can work off with a soft brass brush and something like a toothpick.

A common reason for this is a dirty bed or a too high Z level.
The filament can then curl up against hot and stuck there.
