Filament is curling
Hi guys,
My first post here after a bunch of fun printing. I have now gotten this problem:
It always curls like this, especially when it starts extruding. Sometimes the print can start and stick but generally it'll be fucked at some point during print.
I've done loads of cold pulls and even changed nozzle, tried with disabling fans, etc.
As I understand it next step might be to do a full clean of the extruder? I bought it pre-built by Prusa so i am a bit worried about disassembling it..

Honestly, I don't see the point in disassembling the extruder. You've done cold pulls, new nozzle, i don't see what disassembling the extruder would do. I simply don't see anything in this video that would make it predict a failure during the print, as long as you pull away the curling filament after the hotend has heated up and before the print begins. When you say "it'll be fucked at some point during print", what do you mean specifically? What is getting messed up? You also said you're seeing "z level problems" -- I'm a lot more inclined to believe your problems are caused by that than by a bit of curling filament.
RE: Filament is curling
Doesn't look unusual to me. Some filament will do it more than others. I just watch filament during a load and if it curls I use needle nosed pliers to pull the filament away.

RE: Filament is curling
I'll just swipe it with my finger and it usually straightens up and flows downward.
Now if it consistently bends and squirts out in one particular direction, I would suspect a dirty nozzle opening.
RE: Filament is curling
That's my suspicion too although I'm not exactly sure what that implies other than some disassembly.
It does consistently bend yes, not sure if all directions but usually little bit to the right. The problem is it entangles itself pretty quickly and I'm sure you can imagine it's a problem with fine details later in print.
But currently I have some z level problem with nozzle not touching bed so i can't verify if it almost works like it did before i changed nozzle+filament. But it was failing consistently exactly like this in all situations, filaments and temperatures, and never at all until a couple months ago.
Didnt really have any big blob of dooms either but I'm not sure how much it takes over time to need maintenance.
Oh well, time to man up and break it apart a little.

RE: Filament is curling
I agree with jsw and lha2. I find that if filament curls coming out of the nozzle, I have a partial blockage, which will lead to underextrution particularly on flat horizontal faces. Do whatever you need to do untill it stops doing that.
RE: Filament is curling
Coincidentally, I just changed the filament in my 'other' printer (Ultimaker) and the new filament insisted on curling, or more correctly forming loops when it was purging.
I grabbed it with a dental pick that I had handy, pulled it down, and it then started flowing straight downward as expected.
The print went normally.

Looks perfectly normal, what seems to be the problem?

I find that curling is an indication of a partial blockage, which will lead to underextrution. Maybe thats just my printer.

@towlerg
I only have three MK3 style machines, but that hasn't been my experience at all, I get exactly that kind of loop at the beginning of almost every purge, all it takes is to have the slightest little piece of melted filament touching the end of the nozzle from the last filament that extruded, once it's heavy enough it drops and once the filament stops oozing from the nozzle a quick couple of brass brush strokes and your golden.
Now if your filament has cleared the nozzle and has a length hanging down a bit and the filament still kicks sideways while extruding (purging) after releasing initially, then you may have a partial clog (at least one worth doing something about).
That's been my experience.

I second that.

RE:
I guess we'll have to agree to differ (btw I have a Sovol sv01 with a fake V6 lite). But maybe it's just terminology, I'm referring to the situation where you have cleaned the nozzle and purged several times and it still curls. Uneven pressure in the chamber? In my case I thinks it's and incomplete seal between PTFE tube and nozzle.
