RE: Bulge when print reaches "solid" layers

nope, this is generic filament I had from a project I printed from my wife.  I ran through like 8+ spools of it between two printers.  Never had an issue with having to calibrate the extrusion multiplier for it.

I have to travel for work for the next couple days but I'll probably try some other prints out to see if the problem really is gone, but this is definitely encouraging.

Is your extrusion multiplier calibrated for the filament used for this test? Results are looking better!

RE: Bulge when print reaches "solid" layers

OK, I installed the latest Alpha version.  I did a test print using Classic mode, and using Arachne.  The Classic version shows no improvement.  The Arachne version is very slightly better, but the defect is still quite noticeable.  The "improvement" is really tiny, and could be from printing at night when my shop is much colder.

Basically, I don't think the Alpha version has made a significant change to the behavior on this problem.

Back to S3D...

I also discovered that installing the Alpha Version broke Version 2.5.2.  It loads & runs OK, but when I try to save the gcode file for a print, I get an error.

I re-booted, and it appears to be OK now...

RE: Bulge when print reaches "solid" layers

Just wanted to pitch in.

After reading everything available on the web about this issue, i came to the conclusion it's all about printing speed.

This is the same print, printed with default prusa slicer settings and then the same settings but i've changed all of the speed options to 40 mm.

I was pulling my hair out before because i thought i might have issues with my Z axis.

Would you look at that, the printer doesn't have mechanical issues after all!

Prusa Slicer version 2.2.

RE: Bulge when print reaches "solid" layers

now might be a good time to try a more upto date version of slicer...

A lot has changed while you have been waiting for that print to finish at 40mm/s...  LOL.(only teasing)

Prusa Slicer 2.6.0 is now out....

have you kept your old firmware as well?
there have been advancements there too...

I have my Mk3S with MMU3 running on firmware 3.13.0
no problems.

Yeah but the bulge is still alive and kicking, as I just saw this week on a box-shaped model.

I think I tried this with 2.6.0 and it was still there.  However I did just update my 2 MK3S+ printers with the 3.13.0 yesterday and the one with mmu with the new MMU2S firmware.

I might try it this weekend as I've not done any prints since updating.

@ fuchsr,
Have you been printing at Warp Speed again!?

I Would be interested to see why slow speed helps...

RE: Bulge when print reaches "solid" layers

I'm in shape.  "Round" is a shape...

I have a friend who has a small business, and keeps three Prusa printers running almost non-stop.  I took him a pair of prints, one from Simplify3D, and one from PrusaSlicer.  It wasn't horrible, but the bulge problem was clearly evident in the PS one.  He had never noticed the bulge problem on the jobs he was printing, and was horrified that this had been an on-going problem for so long.  He said he was going to talk to some PS experts he knows, but that was months ago.   I haven't heard a peep.  He always has WAY too many irons in the fire, so I'm not surprised.

RE: Bulge when print reaches "solid" layers

I bought Simplify3d twice..., including the most recent one.    I hate it.   I hate the workflow.   I hate the fact the print time estimates seem wildfly off.  I think I've used it maybe 3 times to test stuff(unsuccessfully).   Out of the box for most things, besides this bulge thing, it's so easy.  PS was what I learned first, and maybe that's why I tend to like it better, but the fact that it's free and is easier to use than something I've paid hard-earned money for is impressive.  I know the bread and butter of something like S3d is the variety of printers it supports, but that's not what I need lol, I just need it to support the printers I have lol

That being said, I do wish the PS guys would get around to fixing this issue soon though.   I'm hoping one day my 5 extruder fully assembled XL will arrive and I can really start doing some ambitious prints.

RE: Bulge when print reaches "solid" layers

I started with Simplify3D 6 years ago, and I prefer the workflow in that, probably because it's what I got used to.  When it looked like they might not survive long enough to release Version 5, I started learning PS as a backup plan.   Simplify 3D Version 5 changed a LOT of things I was used to (and didn't really need changing), and the first couple iterations were buggy, so I still use PS and S3D version 4.0.   I think S3D 5 has stabilized now, and I will install the latest version so I can re-print old jobs and avoid the "bulge" on projects where PS produces unacceptable results.  I'd be much more inclined to abandon S3D completely if it wasn't for this one issue...

RE: Bulge when print reaches "solid" layers

I had a very visceral reaction to the workflow in S3D when I got it after having used PS.   I suppose everyone is different though.  I gravitate to things that make me more productive and S3D was not that for me.  I still have the latest S3D installed but I don't even think I've started it more than 2 or 3 times.   I've not found the defaults to be as good to go out of the box as PS.   If S3D was all I had I'd probably dig in more and figure it out, but that's valuable time I could be spending on something else.

As I get older I find I want to tinker less just to get a good result.

RE: Bulge when print reaches "solid" layers

I have updated to the latest version after my post. First print with default settings, the bulge was there.

Why is 40mm slow? Is it faster theese days? Am i living under a rock?

RE: Bulge when print reaches "solid" layers

I can second this - bulge is still an issue with slicer version 2.6.1. Is there a design workaround that we can use to avoid this ? What do others do ?

Prusa is MKS3S+ w/ MMU3 (formerly MMU2S), 2 Prusa MINI+, Octoprint

RE: Bulge when print reaches "solid" layers

Up to this point I've just lived with it.   I do have a copy of S3D and I hear that doesn't have the issue, but I dislike S3D immensely so I don't use it lol.  I believe the original issue on github indicates is "on their list" but this has been the case for years.  If another slicer doesn't have the issue it seems like a problem that can be fixed....
