Re: Any ideas how to get this flexable material to print?

So what is the latest revision? I see revision #5 on page 9.

I'm going to be getting my printer around the 20th of this month and plan on doing this mod during initial build. Should I wait for another revision to be released or just start printing it now?

You guys are awesome. Thanks a lot for all of your hard work. I just had a huge headache with my last printer and flexible filament. Hoping this will make it go more smoothly

Hi Austen.e2,

you should build your printer as it comes out of the box to see if everything is fine with it. I have see it to many time that there are problems and if you can not be sure what the problem comes from, the Prusa support is maybe not able to help you out. So give yourself some time and do a few test prints with the original assembly and update later. I know that this maybe is a little bit inkonvenient but it will help to trust the printer more.

...and if you are lucky gregsaun will release his extruder until then and you can use that one. It seems to be the most advanced mod. Much better then mine to be honest.

... but also X ends to get max out of this type of X axis. It will not be compatible without the new x-ends (belt path is higher)

What does this mean ?

I didn't use the PRUSA MK2.5 printed parts, I've created my own 😎
(Or maybe will use your's)

Thomas

Ok then here are some features to better understand why I rework the whole X axis :

  • Extruder motor closer by 4.3mm to X rods to avoid vibration

  • Extruder is lighter (also check the work of JLTX if you want really light extruder)

  • Perfect filament path (thanks to this thread)

  • Ventilation of hotend sink as been improved a lot

  • Perfect belt alignment (top and bottom of belts are parallel)

  • X ends have been beefed up

  • X motor is closer to X axis rods to reduce vibration

  • New tensioning system that keeps the belt perfectly aligned (which is not the case if you use MK3 R2 style of tensioner). Use shaft (instead of screw) and dual bearing 16T idler

  • Easier to remove extruder for maintenance (changing the PTFE tube for example)
  • Some features I am working on :

  • Use only one screw for extruder idler

  • Try to move extruder motor even closer to rods

  • Rework x-carriage-cover to make it easier to use during maintenance

  • Currently it is build for MK2.5, but will be then released for MK3 and MK2s

  • Use a shorter PTFE tube to improve flexible filament extrusion
  • If I may offer an idea for an improvement, only because I had to print the piece twice because I broke that part removing the supports :

Rotate this grid part 45° and make it so that the tip of squares will align with the top of the pillars.

It's going to be nicer to print and a lot more sturdy. Even the piece I got from Prusa has saggy bridges.

Rotate this grid part 45° and make it so that the tip of squares will align with the top of the pillars and do the same on the other piece that connects with it to complete the grid.

You do not need any support to print this part 🙂

But I have simplified this part by removing the two vertical part on top of horizontal one, they are useless. I kept the others to protect cables from PINDA and nozzle. I also increased the angle to make air going more up (not sure it is very efficient but quick to do)

I mean you may not need supports, but I do. I don't like crummy bridges and some corner overhangs simply don't print right without supports.

Then you can add a small tower in the middle of the bridges. Just make a space of 0.15mm on top and bottom of each small tower, like this you will be able to break them after printing

I am getting very good results. I made a video to show potential. Posted in other thread:
