ABS globs while printing?

I'm using HatchBox ABS and first I tried the default 110 bed / 255 hot end temps, the globs were bad so I reduced the bed to 80. I even just changed the hot end to an Olssen Ruby to see if that would help. I had one, time to use it.

What is causing these globs with ABS? Obviously it becomes a problem for next layers.

My first guess would be layer-1 Z is too low, so the nozzle is scrubbing adjacent rows, getting worse at bed high spots. Raise the nozzle a bit?

Also, for larger parts, there's a user generated firmware on Github that includes a 7x7 grid Z calibration, and it seems to really help this type of bed issue.

Thanks, I did continue to tinker with z height and it appears I got the magic setting. Print is looking great after a do-over with new z height. I tried the live Z but the prior print just became terrible. Slight warping but to be expected with this large print and no enclosure.

Once a few layers are down, I suggest you increase bed temp to 70c. It will help with some of the warp that is likely. It's helped with some of my larger prints that want to pull off the bed.

Re: ABS globs while printing?

I doubt this my observation will do anything about the ABS globs, but I notice that your heater bed cable is hitting the wall behind your printer. It probably isn't hitting hard enough to affect the Y-Axis motion, but I worry that your cables are getting extra stress where they come out of the bed connector backshells (I forget off the top of my head what these are actually called, so I'll use backshell for now). Have you looked into any alternate bed heater backshells? There is one that is suggested for the LACK enclosure that dresses the heater cables horizontally towards the middle-line of the printer. (I worry this might cause interference with any tall prints in that corner of the print bed, but I don't know.) I've also seen on Thingiverse replacement bed heater backshells that while still dressing the cables towards the back of the printer, they introduce a vertical angle to help mitigate cable interference behind the printer.

Or, maybe just sliding your printer 1" away from the wall would fix this. But that sounds too simple... 😉
