A mysterious material that nothing will stick to

I got a mis-fire from Amazon Basic PETG - ordered a roll of see through red PETG, and what arrived was labeled as ordered, but the color is an off-white.   It's clearly not see through red.  Since I don't like to just waste a whole roll of filament (Amazon sent a replacement in the right color) - I tried printing it as if it was PETG.

Failed print with interesting behavior.  I layered this mystery white into the middle layer on a PETG sandwich.  First layer of PETG went down perfectly (I print this particular item nearly continuously) - then the white went down just fine.  When it came to the second color change, the filament change went fine.  Didn't notice any issues and the new layer (purple) started fine.   After about 3mm into the purple layer (printing 6x of the same part at once on the plate) - every single one of the purple layers "popped off" - and the print failed.

When I examined the print bed full of spaghetti and globs of PETG on my print head (not too bad, cleaned up pretty easily) and tried to put the pieces together - I noticed that I could pull the white and bottom layer apart quite easily.  This mystery material did not stick to the PETG from the first layer, and I could pull the parts cleanly apart with very little effort.

Wondering - how to determine what this white stuff is so I can slot it into the correct production line.

I have to find a slot on my printers schedules ... orders have been steady and some of my lures are on nearly continuous print cycle.  I think I'll look for a good ASA pattern to test with and get it going some time tomorrow.

roll of mystery

Try printing it as ASA.  I received a roll of ASA labeled as PETG.

ASA would be cool.

ASA being hard to get - I'll do just that - try it as if it were ASA.  I sure hope it is.  Thanks

A fan shroud for my MK3s

I know! A spare fan shroud.  Do you think a white fan shroud would have any issues due to the color?

Silly title

I don’t see the fan shroud color affecting anything

Drum roll please ....

Here is that mystery material printed via Prusament ASA profile of a MK3S fan shroud I found on the prints forum.  It's a considerably different than stock fan shroud and has a slot for a nut placement to make it removable.

Print wise, it was like butter.  Started out with Z a bit too low (wavy like water) but adjusted for that before the first layer was over.  The print was a bit stringed up when done, but that was easy to clean up so not worried about it.  Prusament profiles tend to run hot and that can make some stringing.  The print came out great - no bridging issues, and looks clean enough to actually try out.  I hope I can get one for the new MK3S+ that I added to my (now two printer) setup last week.

The print feels solid.  No flexibility at all - even on thin parts.  I'm assuming that I am seeing a cut away support at that top left, but will leave that wafer thin part in place until I actually go to use this.  It looks like it will change how cooling works - much more directed nozzle surround than the original from prusa.

I'll gladly call it ASA.  It's not a bad color even.  What'chall think?

ASA at PETG prices

If I weren't needing the color that I opened at the time I opened the box of filament, getting a different color in ASA would be a nice surprise at the time.   Sitting here imagining how such a mix up happens.  The guy on the ASA winder line ran out of spools so lifted a couple from the clear red PETG pile?  😉

Error

I am not surprised.  Attention to detail is important, and assembly line type jobs can easily increase errors caused by them.
