1st Time PETG Printing
Hi All,
I know there are a number of threads on this but I was not sure on a few things so wanted to ask my own questions.
I have purchased some https://www.amazon.co.uk/SUNLU-filament-Filament-Dimensional-Accuracy/dp/B075Q6T629/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1540470569&sr=1-1&keywords=sunlu+petg+3d+filament+orange from Amazon with the aim to print spares and upgrades for my Mk3 I got the other day.
I have read a lot of articles about printing in PETG and I I know its about patience, time and dialling in the correct settings.
One of the main things is that people talk about adjusting the Z axis to allow more space. Do you do this by running the 1st layer calibration again and raising the Z axis so the layer is not squished with PETG? or is it advised to do this on the live adjust (I presume that only retains for that print)? or should this be done through Slic3r?
Slowing down the first few layers I understand is done via the live adjust and just slow the speed down.
From the other article the Prusa PETG settings are way off for most others. Do you know where I can get the settings for the above PETG?
I am happy to share my results for other first time printers and go through step by step my changes if it works well.

So my first experience with PETG was great.
I just threw it in, used the prusa preset and it worked like a charm.
I had to adjust the Live Z a bit. In the first prints i adjusted live but after a couple of prints i put the Z adjust in the Slicer preset.

Good to hear.
So on the Live adjust you did not do a first layer calibration? Just went straight in with the print and adjusted?
Where did you make the adjustment in Slic3r?

I usually raise (make less negative) my Live-Z settings by 0.02mm for PETG and other "sticky" materials. I'll just watch the skirt go down, then do a quick tweak if the 1st layer looks too close. It varies by filament, but I've never had to do much more than a 0.02mm adjustment.

It could be. Someone once recommended calibrating Live-Z on the printer for PLA, then using embedded filament g-code to adjust the nozzle up slightly and setting this as the new 0 position.

You can slow down the 1st layer in your slicer. The key for me was understanding and using the Max volumetric speed settings in Slic3r. For PETG, this should be set to something like 8. If your slicer doesn't provide settings for volumetric rates, you'll need to do it the old fashioned way and calculate max speeds based on layer height and extrusion width.

You probably already picked this up from other threads but for me the most important key to printing PETG was to slow the first layer WAY DOWN! If you can get the first layer to stick, the rest of the print is probably going to be a breeze, but man that first layer is a pain.
