Y-crash during print startup bed level calibration

I hadn't used my Mk3S+ for a month or two and when I started a print it warmed up normally, then when it went to do the initial automatic 9-point bed level calibration it started at the middle, not the front of the bed, so after 6 points when it tried to do the back 3 points the printhead slammed into the power cable connector and y-crash.  It did that a few more times so I upgraded firmware and did a full printer calibration.  After all that it worked properly once or twice but then started the bad behavior again.  Any ideas or help would be appreciated...

RE: Y-crash during print startup bed level calibration

The three common reasons for prints suddenly failing after a printer has been unused for a while:

A dirty print bed. Give it a really thorough clean and avoid touching the print area.

Damp filament. Look up threads here about drying filament especially if it has been left open.

General neglect, dust and cobwebs... Basic cleaning, lubrication and general maintenance have all been missed.

RE:

Not a failed print.... a failed auto bed leveling.  It skips checking the front 3 points and is trying to go off the back of the bed to look for 3 points there when the printhead collides with the bed heater power cable connector.

So there may be a false stop detection at a dry point, maintenance/lubrication is the first recourse.
