RE: Y Axis knocking sound

I have talked to Prusa support, sent several videos after board replacement and now they said it is perfectly normal sound and they heard it on multiple printers (althou I did not hear anything like this on my other 3D printer). Let`s hope they are right and it won`t get worse... .

I will mitigate this issue for now by dampening this sound as much as possible.

If anyone needs collected info what I have tried and what has helped or not.

Tried and got some improvements:

  • Turning on slient mode - sound got much quieter, but I can still hear it
  • Changing infill direction to 90° made sound dissapear during it`s printing, so this seems to behappening only when both X and Y motors are moving

Tried but did not help:

  • MMU2S diconnect
  • Firmware downgrade
  • Factory reset
  • Board replacement
  • Turning off: fan, heated bed, collision detection, filament sensor
  • Connect Y motor to X motor`s slot and X motor to Y motor`s slot, that moved the sound from Y motor to X motor
  • Removing Y motor from frame makes sound dissapear - but this sound then can be felt as strong pulsing in motor
  • Checked gcode - in those places where this sound happens there are G1 X? Y? E?, so just simple linear movements
  • Checked voltages, they seem to be fine:
    • While idle - PWR: 23.9°, Bed: 23.8° - 23.9°
    • While printing - PWR: 23.7° - 23.8°, Bed: 23.7° - 23.8°

RE: Y Axis knocking sound

Hi everyone, I have a brand new MK3S just a few weeks old that’s doing this. At first I thought it was my bearings but after diagnosis tonight I can feel it right on the back plate where the motor is.

I have ordered rods and bearings but now don’t think it’s that. It’s a dull knock as the Y axis is moving in long runs like on larger longer flat prints.

I was beginning to think this was the stepper motor bearing but reading here it’s more unlikely from the sounds of it

Any concrete ideas on what this may be ?

Below is 2 videos on this.

My printer started doing this two days ago.  Exact same noise as in the ianjlewis press knock 2 video.  I have about 90 hours on mine and have lubricated the rails and bearings, everything is running smooth.  Posting to see if there was any into from support or a solution.

As I have mentioned earlier - I have talked to Prusa support and they said it is normal sound.

I have simply dampened sound as much possible (to level that it is not heard anymore) and till now it does not seem to be affecting printing / quality.

Brand new mk3s. One week old, 4 hours print time. It is a kit self assembled.

I have the same sound coming from my y motor/mount area. Can feel the 'pulse' synced in rhythm with the noise if placing a finger on the back frame brace where the motor mounts.

Other than the normal dialing in for petg first layer gripes printer so far seems to be... okay. Jury still out compared to my workhorse mk2s. (That thing just goes and goes with amazing print quality).

I will provide any changes/feedback on this issue. For now, bigger fish to fry but will contact support so its documented.

I have it too.  Just built and with bearings aligned as directed.

Hi Manfred,

I have the exact same problem with a prusa assembled purchased.

Could you solve it? 🙂

RE: Y Axis knocking sound

I have noticed the exact same y-axis sound across all 5 of my MK3s for as long as I can remember. Today while working on a new print, I got to thinking about the sound again.

One odd thing that I just noticed, is that I only hear it on solid layers, but more interesting is that it only occurs on every other layer. Just like the video above, I only hear it when solid infill is being laid down in a 1:30 to 7:30 o'clock orientation. This might point to an issue in the generated gcode from Slic3r. I'd have to do some tests using Cura to compare.

It does sound like a sudden "jump" is happening during the motor's movement. Perhaps a rounding error?

Ultimately, I see no artifacts in the final print, so not sure the issue will get much attention.

Nope. It's not Slic3r. I'm hearing the tap tap tapping while printing a file generated in Cura 4. Same sound and only while printing solid layers in a SW/NE direction.

I do have linear advance enabled in the gcode. I might try disabling and trying later. Will update if I can make it go away somehow.

Hello I have same problem. Anyone came up with solution? Maybe bearing shaft holder makes some difference? Did anyone try to loosening belt on y axis, maybe that helped?

Chiming in here to say that my new MK3S+ kit is making the exact same sounds.  Wow, can't believe that there is not fix or understanding of what exactly it is after these years.

Exactly the same sound here with 45deg movement. Week old factory assembled MK3S+ with 70 hours in. Printer is awesome and prints have been just perfect but would like to uderstand what is causing the sound.
