y-axis is loud
The x-axis is so quiet that it can't be heard over the cooling fans.
The z-axis is slightly louder, but it never transits far enough (during normal printing) to ever be noticed.
The y-axis is a lot louder. I'm not sure if I've over-tightened the linear bearings, the belt, both?
Any suggestions?
Re: y-axis is loud
To be clear, it's really not loud... certainly no more so than my previous printer... it's only loud in comparison to the mk3'sx-axis... which is made up of mostly the same components.
Re: y-axis is loud
Mine is louder than the x-axis too. It might help to post a video so that others can judge how loud is too loud.
Re: y-axis is loud
I have done quite a bit of experimenting with the Y axis noises, from adjusting belt tension to disassembling the whole Y carriage, lubricating the **** out of it and reassembling.
My Y axis is still louder than X and Z, but I think there's just so much you can do about it. Here's a couple words of advice:
- Make sure your bearings are lubricated well. Best way of doing it is to take them off the smooth rods and put a few drops of thin lube inside (I used silicone oil for mine).
- Make sure the U bolts holding down the bearings are not loose. What you can do to check this (with heatbed taken off) is to grab each nut with your fingers and try rocking it side to side. If it moves, you need to tighten it (but be careful not to overtighten).
- Check if Y axis motion doesn't cause vibrations inside your PSU. If it does, you'll probably need to get creative eliminating them (electrical tape under resonating heatsing worked for me).
Re: y-axis is loud
the u bolts can absolutely tweak the bearings if tightened enough. I use un-unjacketed igus bearing on Y so that makes u bolt tension even more important for me. Tighter belts will also make more noise. I tightened mine from 280 to 220 and its noticeably louder.

IMHO, that is WAY WAY WAY too tight. No wonder it makes it louder.

not according to the manual its not.
Re: y-axis is loud
Thanks everyone. I'm in the middle of a long print ATM, but when that finishes, I'll disassemble, lubricate, and adjust u-bolts and belt tension... will report back after.
Re: y-axis is loud
I wouldn't trust too much in the numbers given by the belt tension indicator. I adjusted my belts by feel to what I would consider the top reasonable tension limit (so that they give nice 'bassy' sound) and the indicator still showed me values around 290.
Re: y-axis is loud
Yes the Y-axis is louder, nothing unusual because the heatbed is like a drumhead, all noises are amplified.

Re: y-axis is loud
I was having same problem, checked u-bolts, lubed linear and Y idler bearings. Made it better, but not great. I noticed significant noise and vibration coming from the Y idler.
The idler bracket was not firm against the frame when setting the belt tension correctly. I added two small rubber o rings, one to each fastener between the bracket and the frame. Then tightened the fastener to the correct belt tension.
Now the bracket is firm, and partially insulated from the frame. It made for a significant improvement.
Re: y-axis is loud
The Y-axis stepper motor also generate vibrations which are directly transmitted in the printer frame due to the stepper body in contact with the rear steel plate, especially with well tensioned belt.
On my printer I'm unable to insert a sheet of paper between the stepper and the frame.
Maybe a redesign of the stepper bracket can solve partialy the noise exess, with one which increase the rear gap to avoid direct metal to metal contact.
I've seen on Thingiverse redesigned Y-axis brackets also much more stiffer.

RE: y-axis is loud
Hi, I just get my MK3S and I'm surprised how loud the Y-axis is comparing to my Ender 3 with the silent board. I think Prusa should consider upgrading their bearings.
RE: y-axis is loud
Agreed, the Prusa y axis is really loud. I got an assembled printer as an upgrade to my Ender 3. I do have a silent board on the Ender and I can run it through the night without any complaints from my family. However the Prusa, now relegated to the garage, sits on a foam mat, and still causes a lot of noise in the house during the day. And there is NO WAY I can print with it at night. A real shame as I bought it to do big mechanical prints that are 24 hours or longer. I'm still using the Ender for those, even though the Prusa will create better quality parts with better tolerances.
It seems to be at its worst above 40mm/s movement. So I can turn everything down but then the prints take a really long time.
I thought the Prusa was supposed to be a quiet printer. It's x axis, z axis and fans are quiet, but the y axis resonates so loud.
RE: y-axis is loud
I will only add, that my Y seems to give off sounds louder and quieter, based on the gcode or print as well. (Sometimes just different)
What I mean by this is that when I slice objects, mine is relatively quiet. But when I use Gcode produced by someone else, like commercial produced gcode, or any other source, the sounds tend to be different. I assumed it was settings within the slicing software used to make the gcode. Yes it is louder depending on the source of the Gcode, but in my case, I don't know if I would say too loud.
Of course I did also just build a LACK enclosure for many reasons, including to make it quieter as well, so maybe mine is too loud also. 😉

hello my friend, same issue with mine. i could not use as i want because of Y axis movement create big noise :(. is there any solution?
RE: y-axis is loud
@malist
Try the printer on the floor and see if it's still noisy? If it's quieter than the table the printer is sitting on is resonating creating that Y axis noise. I had the exact same thing having just built a MK3S+.
RE: y-axis is loud
My Y axis was loud from the day I turned the printer on. I saw a picture in a long post/thread about silencing the printer and noticed a zip tie around the Y axis motor on a post labeled the fix or something like that. Just a picture of the Y axis stepper motor zip tied tightly against the back frame.
I tried it on my printer. My now quiet Y axis printer.
The original Stepper mount that holds the Y motor to the bar on the back of the frame leaves the motor pretty much rubbing the frame. In normal use the motor vibrates, and the vibration against the frame is that loud noise you hear.
I have recently printed a replacement motor mount downloaded from the prints section of this place, it has a carriage stop built in - but I haven't had the time to try that - I hear I have to shorten the belt, yada yada. But the Y motor makes a lot of noise buzzing against the back frame.
RE: y-axis is loud
@dan-rogers
same here! replaced the Y idler and tensioner + mk3 belt clamp and the Y motor with builtin stop and BAM! rattling like this!
i guess i'll pad the motormount or revert to the stock one.
THIS is the extent of my rattling... wrote to prusa btw...

Same problem, have you solved it yet?
