If any devs are monitoring, just adding my experience as well--

MK3

Slicer: 2.5.0

Firmware: 3.12.1-5686

Printing an approximately 35mm diameter hose coupler (Tall, Round) in ABS with enclosure (High Temps).  Getting Y axis crashes at around 40mm in height.  Repeatable across 3 prints so far.  If I continue the print through about 10 back to back crashes, the print resumes without problems.  This could be due to things cooling off since I have to open the enclosure to continue the print.  Everything else about the printer is well maintained.

My takeaway from this thread is to turn off crash detection for prints like this, and I am pretty confident this will work, but a definitive cause (and fix) of the problem would be more satisfying.  I appreciate everyones investigations and suggestions.

I am also in the same boat as everyone, perfect prints without crash detection, but since last week, when crash detection is turned on then the printer detects a lot of false positives. Also the cables are not being pushed by anything and are freely moving.

I have been having the same problem, mostly notable when printing multiple objects.  I have watched the printer and cannot see where it is crashing.  Nothing is in the path of anything else.  I decided today to tear all of the moving parts down and clean/lube everything and the problem still exists.  I've messed with the belts, speeds, etc and it still happens.  Even disabling crash detection did nothing.  I have now reverted back to the 3.11.0 firmware as I am wondering if there is something with the update causing the issues.  I'll post back after a few tests.

Slicer: 2.6.0

Firmware: 3.12.1

Printing a round object in PETG also getting Y-axis crashes. I disassembled the y-axis and lubricated the internals of the bearings along with the rods. I spent a lot of time verifying the bearings are properly oriented with the bearing u-bolts tightened just enough that there is no fastener or bearing movement without over tightening. This printer is quieter now but I am still getting y-axis crashes detected. I just tried loosening the fastener on the y-axis pulley, it was a little tight but did not seem over tight. 

If I get more y-axis crashes detected I may try downgrading firmware to 3.11 because I was not having this issue until I recently updated the firmware. My x-axis is also a little noisy so I may disassemble the x-axis and try to lubricate the bearings since I think it needs it anyway.

Did a couple of things and haven't had any crashes since. Didn't print a lot though, so it could be coincidence.
What I changed:

- Added heatsink for the stepper motor (X & Y)
- Added heatsink for the stepper drivers (all of them)
- Replaced the Y acis stepper motor holder with one made of PCCF.
- Reassambled the Y axis roller (the part behind the screen) and tightend the screw (which is also the axis for the roller) gently, so the roller runs smoothly on it

I don't have heatsinks on hand but I wanted to try to test Hauser_Ger's stepper driver overheating model. I took a 15cm external desk fan and pointed it directly at the back of my Einsy Rambo board on high and the mk3s+ was finally able to finish my cylindrical test print without any Y axis crashes. 

I immediately turned the fan off and restarted the print. With the external fan off the mk3s+ had 5 Y-axis crashes within the first 30min of my 150min print. 

So @Hauser_ger what size heatsinks are you using for the stepper drivers? Mine are labeled TMC2130-LA which looks like its a 5x6mm chip. Where is the cheapest place the buy heatsinks of all different sizes?

I just tried the same test print again with my external fan on low and the 150min print finished with only one y axis crash.

BUT the top heatsing needs to be clipped down, because of the cable inlet/housing. First row to 1/3rd, second row to 2/3rds height. The 3 other heatsinks can stay as they are.

I put heat sinks on all drivers and still had 4 y-axis crashes in the first 90minutes of my test print. I stopped the print and added a heat sink to the stepper motor and still had a similar amount of crashes. 

I turned my external fan on low and restarted the test and it finished without any crashes two times in a row. At least with my fan on low it is not really audible over the printer but it’s still not my ideal state.

Do you know which stepper driver goes to which motor? I assume the top driver is for x-axis and second one from top is the y-axis. I only have one heat sink of similar size to you and the rest are all a smaller size.

     Was wondering if you rolled back the firmware to 3.11 and did this help.

UPDATE: Issue is back, no idea why. Seems to me as if certain prints trigger this issue a lot more than others. Done some prints with NO issue at all. Just printig the Prusa Fixed 3DBenchy and my MK3S(+) is constantly crashing the Y-axis. 🙁

Disabled the crash detection now.

I ended up disabling the crash protection on the printer, and it has been printing fine since then with the prints coming out perfectly. My guess is that whatever is triggering a "crash" is doing so incorrectly in my case. 

bingo! had the same issues for years and eventually it started up again, phantom crashes only on y when printing high temp filament such as ASA/PC, etc. I have a fan installed on the einsy board to help cool the drivers too. this initially seemed to help, but these crashes always come back. I turned it off and it works as expected. No more phantom crashes or trying to chase it down. its glitchy.

yes this is also true. i noticed when trying to print the mk2 fan shroud seemed to always "crash" . just turn off the damned thing and be done. you'll never fix it permanently, i think its just not 100% accurate.

Hi, I have same problem, I put my MK3S+ to Prusa Enclosure and crash detection problem start. 

NOW maybe I finded a what can help.

1. put grease in to bearings
2. put some oil to Bearing housing 623h ( before oil, test on screw driver 3mm and, after put oil, you will se a different, I think it s help !! ) 

 

I test it with PC Blend 

...grease absorbs heat ( grease mogul LV 2-3 )

From my side I think I might have a stepper motor that might be on its way out. But for the mean time a added a fan to my Y axis stepper motor and I've not once now had a crash detection. I think its gets to hot and there might be some expansion internally, but as I've said the fan keeps it cool and it prints with no issues.....

I started to experience Y-Axis crashing shortly after upgrading firmware to 3.12.2.

I went back to firmware 3.11.0 and no more Y-axis crashing.

I'm new to 3D printing and I don't have much to add to this discussion.  Just a data point: got a brand new assembled MK3S+, on firmware 3.11.0, and it's also giving me lots of Y-axis crashes since Z level ~12 when printing all 6 models in https://www.printables.com/model/302846-everything-presence-one-official-case altogether (used PrusaSlicer's default arrange feature to place the models).

Have MK3S+ in an enclosure. Things that will help to prevent Y-Axis crashes for me:

Open enclosure door
Heatsink on Y-Motor
Print cylindrical object on back of bed. Helps to move heated bed away from Y-Motor for it to run cooler.

Need Start-Up G-code to turn off crash detection... and a firmware that supports it.
