XYZ Calibration fails, Y-Axis micromovents during process

Hi everyone,

i got a MK3S+ which worked good the last 2 years, but after a cleaning and tightening the belts i got issues with th XYZ Calibration.

During the calibration there are weird micromovents of the y-axis towards the display, which i didnt notice before.

Here is a video where you can see and hear it, between 1:42 and 2:01 it happens three times:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KXmBSBTGLLwpnK_1vaJ8BKr3V_uUKTPx/view
(there is one screw missing in the bed, but thats not the issue, it worked like this before too)

I already tried making the belt less tight, complete reset and flashing new firmware.

Selftest is working, also i can print after first layer calibration, but the quality is poor and there is shifting during the prints.

The stepper motors themselves work normal too.

What could be the issue?

Thanks for help.

Always use a sheet of paper as instructed at 0:40, without you risk damaging the heating tracks.  The mini-steps are repositioning to get an accurate location for the magnet.

The printer is a little noisy, time to check the bearings.

With the power off, move each axis by hand; is it smooth? Does the resistance stay the same over the whole range?

Check the smooth rods are not damaged/scratched. Check the idler pulleys are not clogged, out of line, or damaged (loosen the belt and try turning it with your fingertip, is it smooth?)

With the belt loose try turning the stepper motor by hand; is it smooth?   You should feel the steps but no grating.

Retighten the belt until it just begins to make a low musical note when plucked...

If the printer works, make your next print this:

https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/46639-tension-meter-for-the-gt2-belts-of-i3-mk3s-or-prus

It MUST be printed in Prusament PETG or the spring tension will be wrong.

Let us know how you get on.

RE: XYZ Calibration fails, Y-Axis micromovents during process

Thanks for your help, i checked everything again, i noticed that when i move the y-axis manually, the last steps when i move the heatbed towards the display are not so smooth as the rest, but i cant find out why....

I tried it with tight and more loosen belt, but no sucess.

The bearings and the pulley are okay, no damages in the smooth rods, evertything moves smooth

I checked the serial output and there was no error or simillar in the logs during the calibration process.

Also i tried it with some older firmware but that didnt work either.

I really dont get it, guess i have to completly dismantle and rebuild the whole printer, but i would like to avoid that.

Selftest and other calibration works, thats why its so weird.

I dont have any prusament filament here right now for the test, maybe i can try that later.

Do you have any other idea?

Could changing the y-axis stepper motor help?

Thanks.

OK, double check the Y axis idler pulley - sometimes a bearing looks good but is beginning to collapse internally.

Lubricate the Y axis smooth rods - in fact run through: https://help.prusa3d.com/en/article/i3-printers-regular-maintenance_2072

and  https://help.prusa3d.com/guide/maintenance-tips_23200

So now after a night with tesing all again it is working.

I tightened the y-axis belt almost as much as possible, also the small screws on the x-axis motor were a bit loose, so i tighened them too.

After that i could run the XYZ calibration sucessfully and print with the old good quality:)

Thank you for your help!
