X Axis belt in poor condition
I noticed my X axis belt seems to be in poor condition. Does this look normal to anyone? I've only had the printer for a few weeks and surprised to see the belt like this already.
Re: X Axis belt in poor condition
that looks like the belt has been rubbing against the sides of either the X xis end pieces, the idler or the drive gear. as this is the X axis, the most common gotcha, is putting the motor drive gear on the wrong way, the boss with the retaining screws goes towards the outer end of the motor shaft. (this is counter intuitive)
putting the drive gear on back to front causes misalignment in the belt path...
which can cause this sort of issue
can you check this, and if it's not the problem, can you give us pictures of the motor end and idler end of the X axis please
regards Joan

Re: X Axis belt in poor condition
Hi Joan,
The drive gear is installed correctly. (Someone on facebook warned me about it before I got to it)
See the attached photos.
Thanks

Did you ever find a solution to this I have a similar problem

I'm waiting for Joan to reply, stay tuned! 🙂
Re: X Axis belt in poor condition
The crack/cut on the belt is not normal. The "hairs" are more normal and may appear from friction. I noticed friction coming from 1) using screw on the left idler to increase belt tension which twists the belt which makes it have friction with walls or 2) belt is not equally seating at the same place on the x cartridge. If you move the hotend from left to right (end-2-end), do you notice the belt seating exactly on the same location on the pulley? Do you see the belt slightly twisting? If yes to any of these things then reseat the belt in the x cartridge.
The cut is another story. I would replace the belt since with tension I wonder if the cut will get bigger and bigger. That is also probably not good for sudden moves/stops which may affect print quality

Have you seen the photos yet?
Re: X Axis belt in poor condition
good morning Joseph,
yes I have seen the Photo's,
both ends look as if the belt is being squashed against the front side of the roller, if you look into the X motor end of the x axis, does it look as if the belt is running straight or at an angle? (slight angle)

Hi Joan,
Sorry for the delay, I was camping and just got back. I don't see any angle looking at either side. I tried adjusting the drive gear out a bit and centered the belt but the belt returns to one side after the extruder moves all the way left and right. I'm at a loss for what I can do next.
Re: X Axis belt in poor condition
Hmmm....
no direct idea what to do,
suggestion. GT2 belt is cheap,
how about changing the belt, checking the Idler has the bearing properly centred, (Or get a dual bearing idler)
and see what happens.....
it's possible the belt may have been damaged or faulty, and give it another test drive...
consider printing updated X ends, and changing them in case the idler bearing bolt is off square!
regards Joan

Can you send me a new belt? Apparently, Prusa is using Gates GT2 belts now, mine is not a Gates belt so maybe that is why.
Re: X Axis belt in poor condition
Good evening Joseph,
I think you eroneously believe I work for Prusa,
I am a Prusa customer, like yourself. I recently bought some Gates GT2 belt for stock and it was quite inexpensive...
Something like this will do
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2M-GATES-6mm-GT2-RF-Fiber-Glass-Reinforced-Rubber-Timing-Belt-for-3D-int/153096076059?epid=5021204561&hash=item23a53cbb1b:g:kCsAAOSweM1Z-trU
there would probably be enough to do three belts.

Re: X Axis belt in poor condition
Yes I did, as you're a moderator... makes sense, sorry, please don't buy me belts 🙂
Re: X Axis belt in poor condition
I know the Prusa guys are busy, so I volunteered to help support the forum, getting rid of Spam as quickly as possible and helping where possible.
there are a number of us who are reasonably experienced with the printers who are moderators.
I believe the prusa folk are all administrators... (Red Label)
