Strange noises, false-positive Crash detections

Hi Forums,

I have a couple of issues with my MK3. It has run for only about 15 hours and already had quite a few "crash"-detections. Today, after 1 hour of print time, multiple strange noises started to show up.

1. issue: High pitched noise, propably from the PSU
2. issue: rattling noise whenever the extruder carriage changes direction
3. issue: strange grinding noise on certain movements
4. issue: a lot of false crashes, resulting in more print-time and print artifacts (so far 8 on X and 5 on Y)

Of course i paid close attention to the instructions, did the assembly with a buddy, double checking every step and I'm used to printers and mechanical stuff - none of my other printers has any of the worries i got with my MK3 🙁

Here is a video. All the described noises are there, the noise from the 3rd issue is best illustrated at arount 1:10

Did you experience similar behavior on your machines? Are there fixes? Help! :geek:

When powered off, everything sounds fine. Even axis-movement and extrusion via menu are fine, just in the combination or at fast movements it starts to sound wrong. I checked X and Y for variation in resistance when moving manually but they feel the same all the way. The high pitches PSU sound now starts at every print after around 5 Minutes.

Hi Felix,

That sounds Nasty!

my mk3 is nearly silent...

I have never heard noises like that..., ask the helpdesk to look at the video... use chat in the eShop!

have you tried lubing the linear bearings
for the movement noises?

regards Joan

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

Not yet, since there ist visible lubricant at the end of the rods. The bearings came pretty well oiled and since i didnt have any serious runtime, i didnt see any need to add to it.

Have you found a solution? Mine has developed a similar sound.

Felix,
For issues 1 & 2, I inserted some zipties between the plastic insulating sheet and the frame in the PSU. This got rid of all sounds from it. Still hear the faint popping sound of the caps discharging during print bed PWM heating.

The oil in the bearings as received from Prusa are not lubricant, but a sealing oil to keep them from rusting up. Seeing that you're getting good movement with them, you may choose to consider lubing them if other options don't pan out.

I cleaned my out with some electrical cleaning solution and soaked them in Marvel Mystery Oil. Not sure if that stuff is available outside the US, but it has server me well. My bearings are silent.
