If it's a non prusa fan. Use the hidden experimental menu. To allow alternate fans

Look in the prusa knowledge base..

Prusa replacement fan. Tried holding down both fans so they don't spin, ticking still happens.

 what is the ambient temperature where your printer is?
is the printer in an enclosure?

could you try re slicing the STL with retraction length set to say 0.4mm

Try unplug the fan cable and set fan off in prusa slicer or turn fan check off

Ambient temp when printing is usually ~72-74F, no enclosure. AC was running during my few tests, but no air directly on printer that I can recall.

I can re-slice with that retraction setting, was also thinking of increasing print temp. Currently using default for Prusament PLA, test filament was Galaxy Green but I have been having trouble with that filament roll causing print failures every few hours. Will swap to a different roll as well.

@Hello Pretty sure the fan isn't the issue as I don't think it would stop during retraction/movement (like the sound did) for the fraction of a second it was taking. If this is incorrect I can check.

Sorry for delay, was out of town. Tried changing filament rolls to one I know had no issues. Ticking still occurs on layers 2 to ~5 (of the benchy slice), which I believe was the same as previous tests. Retraction was already at .4mm. Print temp is 215°.

Sorry didn't see your last post the only thing I can see it being is fan stepper motor or stepperdriver if it isn't the fan my guss is the driver is the noise coming from the einsy board does it happen when fan spins on start up does it happen if you homing it visible lcd menu does it happen when loading filament

Don't believe it is from the fan given that it doesn't appear to happen past the first few levels. Other option I can try is slicing and test printing an articulated octopus, which is what I was first printing when I noticed the sound, tomorrow afternoon. Could there be filament sticking during the solid bottom layers? I wouldn't think so with the temp at 215°, unless the temp probe isn't reading correctly and the temp is low...

OK it's probably stepper motor or driver does the printer read normally Temps when at room temp

Temps appear to read normal when not printing. Don't see how it could be the stepper motor if it is only happening on certain layers... Not seeing any unusual movement either, appears to be smooth.

The way to tell if it is load filament keep purging then unload does it still make a noise

Sorry for delayed response, I haven't had time to touch printer this last week.

Not the filament. I did have a firmware update notice and I updated firmware, it had me rerun the thermal calibration. The ticking happened again, no filament loaded and no servo movement during the test. I stopped fans with fingers briefly and ticking continued. It looks like my earlier comments about it stopping on retraction movement were incorrect as well. 

I tried a test print to check a spool of filament (a different spool was causing print failures every few hours) and I noticed:

Ticking started on second layer, and stopped on when layer/Z reached .80mm (fans also kicked up speed). Temp was also fluctuating a bit during this time varying from at least 213 to 215.

Is there something in the hotend that could cause the ticking?

Dounds like 2 hotend wires are arching each other could you take a picture of the wires where they connect to einsy and hotend

I will follow up with a photo once the test print is done in ~3.5 hours (or less if it fails).

That is what I thought it might be but I didn't see anything when it was ticking. And the fact it stops after a couple layers is odd?

Thinking back again I seem to recall some small vibrations during the heat test when I stopped the fan with my fingers briefly during the ticking. Is there a way to retrigger the heat calibration so I can take a photo during ticking and check for the vibration?

Yes calibration thermal model calibration I wouldn't continue the print if I was you if it is the heater cartridge be prepared to see flames or smoke it could stop because it hits idle temp and not as.much power is needed I did find somebody with the same issue a few years ago a little ticking the smoke then there heater cartridge looked like bellow

I am in the same room so I can keep an eye on it. What would be different in layers 2-4 though that would cause extra power draw? It doesn't do it during preheat or filament changes when heating up from cold. In fact when I was just looking at it, the temp did a little repeated bouncing between 214-215 with no ticking.

I can also try doing an Estep calibration, but I don't think that is the issue due to the clicking happening with no filament loaded during thermal calibration.

I just wish I could recall if it did this before I changed the fan or moved to Slicer 2.6.

Oh you said it did it in thermal calibration that's when it gets lots of.power on 3rd.layer the.power drops admit just trickles it to.keep the heat up

Sorry for the confusion. Right now I have heard the ticking in two instances: layers 2-4 on a print (PLA @ 215) and during the thermal calibration when it was at peak (~230). Sorry for the questions, just trying to understand the power draw process here.

I did have a blob of doom about..2 years ago? But I didn't have any print issues after cleaning that off, but my printing tends go months with nothing and then a burst of printing.

It'd definitely say its the heater cartridge

When the printer hits temperature it shutdown power to the heater cartridge then it gives very low volts to the heater how's the print going
